Anyone know how to calculate MPG?

Posted

Easiest and most accurate way is:

1. fill the tank to the brim (say second click on the fuel pump)

2. note mileage

3. when you next fill up, fill the tank to the brim (second click again)

4. note how many litres you've put in and note mileage

5. divide the number of litres by 4.546 to convert to gallons

6. divide the mileage figure at 4 by the figure produced from stage 5

This should then give you an idea of your mpg.

Brilliant. Thanking you muchly. That will come in handy.

I got Aygo on sunday with half tank of petrol so I'll use that up first and I'll use your calculations.

Cheers

OR

If you are afraid of making an incorrect calculation, you could use something like Fuelly

http://www.fuelly.com/

It tracks the fuel and amount used through web or app, just by entering the basic info. Be aware that it is a USA site, so you need to make sure your settings are changed to Imperial gallons, NOT USA gallons, otherwise your calculations will be incorrect

That will take you a few hundred miles then :)

I don't know the size of your tank, but I've noticed that I often put about 45 litres in our cars to fill them. There are 4.545 litres in a gallon, so 45 litres is approx 10 gallons. So, if I travel, say, 420 miles on a 45 litre fill, then I can do an easy calculation, ie 420 miles divided by 10 gals = 42mpg. Obviously it's not perfectly exact, but it gives a good indication.
