Rav 4.2 Transmission

I'm about to change the transmission oils and back axle oil in my 2004 xt3 manual petrol rav. Does the gearbox and transfer box share the same reservoir or do they have seperate ones? Is semi or fully synthetic oil preferred?

Thanks in advance, John.

The transfer box has a separate oil reservoir - check the service sheets in the Technical Section for oil quantities and grades. Fully synthetic is best for transmission oils.

Thanks for the reply. That is what I thought, however when I asked Opie Oils for an oil recommendation, they informed me that it was linked with the gearbox- shared oil. I have always valued their advice but am now rather confused.

The early 4.2 model had a separate transfer box oil reservoir on the auto version only- the manual had a combined gearbox / transfer box. If you look at the tech section - changing transmission oil - you'll see pics of the transfer box being drained on a 4.2.

I quite agree but Opie Oils say that a 2004 manual petrol has a combined gearbox and transfer box.

Hi John
Is that a manual or auto? I have the transfer box listed as part of the gearbox (shared oil) in the manual version, the auto has a separate transfer box.
Regards

Tim

Thanks for all your help. Went to local motor factors for oil for transfer box and diff. They had a EP 80w-90 gl5 but it was a mineral oil, is this ok or should I look for a semi-synthetic?

I'm sure it will be fine. Diffs and transfer boxes are often neglected on Ravs - the volume is small so it's important to change according to the schedule. You'll need 2 litres so it's not a huge cost even if you buy something like Castrol Universal (semi synthetic) from Halfrauds.
