Hi, i have a auris but 1.3. Im not sure about the diesels but the petrols are amazing. Ive had myne for just under a year now, 10 months and it hasent had any problems. It doesent make any odd whining sounds or growls, it just gets me from A to B without any fuss. I also had a VW before i brought my auris, it was a absolute night mare, always having these ******* dashboard lights after it did a motorway journey (which was very rare) and it was just crap. I switched to auris and its amazing. Cant really say anything on the diesels but ive heard problems with the 2.2 DCATS but the 1.4 sounds pretty trouble free.

The 2.0 and 2.2 diesel engines in the Auris up to build date September 2009 could have head gasket issues, and Toyota covered these under goodwill for 7 years/111,846 miles - fitting new 3/4 engines. No head gasket issues for cars with build dates after September 2009.

all diesels need egr valves to be checked/cleaned regularly to keep them spot on. Depending on the year of your golf you could just get a delete kit and not run one. I think from memory if you blank it on the Toyota it throws eml lights

VW's are the king of emls, every month a new light, cost me over £700 in just diagnostics in 3 year ownership, all at independent dealers for £40 each time. It was a 54 plate, people have no idea of this when purchasing a golf, they look at reviews and see 5 star reliability which is just fake. All the reviewers expect for honest john must get paid by VW to talk about its 5 star reviews, when you see honest john, he has a 3 star review and was originally 4.5 but taken down to 3 due to its bad reliability. Im sure im not the only one who had these problems, mechanic told me the most cars which come in a VW's and my mates who own Passats and Golfs have exactly the same problem. Myne had full VW service history since 2004 and yet VW dident care about any 'goodwill'.
