Slight Whine 1.0Ltr Manual

Took my IQ for a longish run (for me anyway) yesterday, (about 100 Miles mostly motorway)

Progress was at motorway speeds 60-70MPH I noticed coming home that there was a very slight "transmission whine" noise .

Scan gauge readings all normal and no overheating, no loss of power, just a very slight, what I would call "transmission whine"

Whine was slight at all speeds.

As my IQ is a manual (not CVT) I found this unusual !

Never noticed it before,

Not that many miles since my last full Toyota Service,

My Miles now are only 43,500 Miles year is 2010.

Any Ideas from the experts on this forum ?

Positive Regards,

Bob.

Not an expert, but can say that ours is the same, also a 1.0l manual at 53401 miles. Yesterday we travelled from Marton in Shropshire to Stafford, a mix of rural, dual carriageway and motorway, then urban roads. There is a slight whine, and this is something I was a little concerned about when I first heard it. Only, I have heard it before when travelling up to Cheshire on the A483 and quite a stretch of dual carriageway. I had forgotten about it as for the last three or four trips that way I have used the A49 as my main route. I noticed on our trip yesterday that I soon 'tuned it out' and was not worried, just put it down to the poky sounding engine and transmission. Still, on the M6 it was only 50mph due to the road works they are still doing between Cannock and J13 South Stafford turn off. The road works on the lower part of the M54 (J3 to M6, I came off the M54 at J2 onto the A449) was restricted to 50mph also, on the Eastbound side -heading for Birmingham. I think however, as our car is in for a service on the 19th Sept, I will mention it to the service desk people. It is also having it's first front brake pad renewal. Will let you know any discoveries Bob from the service people.

Hi Bob thank you for your above comments. If it gets no worse I will ignore it however I have not noticed it at all before on longer runs and I am wondering if it the beginning of a bearing failure somewhere in the transmission ?

Time will tell, however I am out of warranty and would prefer to get rid of the car before it develops into something that will cause a large repair bill.

Change the oil in the gear-box...

Change the oil in the gear-box...

I thought that would be a service item Peter? I assumed, wrongly or rightly, that the mechanics at Mr T's dealerships, being the very diligent people they are, would check this without fail? Am I expecting too much of them do you think?

Could be lots of things really from a simple alternator drive belt to the transmission, hard to tell where a noise is coming from when you are driving the car.

Could be a wheel bearing but they tend to change noise according to speed, not engine revs as do drive shafts and gearbox output shaft bearings.

If the noise follows the engine revs then I guess the next thing is to see if it makes a noise when the car is stationery and in neutral. If it does then could be a drive belt, alternator bearing, water pump etc.

See if it comes back and see if it gets worse I guess.

Craig.

Like the oil...I would also change the sparks way sooner than they advise...

My CVT whined a bit during a steep uphill with the trailer of 350 kilo's... In a while I will change the transmission oil...

Thanks for all your above comments. Mine is manual not CVT and my noise is not engine revs related, (does not follow engine revs) a little speed related it does get louder at about 50MPH + +

I recon it is either gearbox / drive chain or wheel bearing, in my "humble experience" it does not sound like a wheel bearing that often sound like"grating"rather than a whine, and it is more like transmission bearing (gearbox) noise that gets slightly worse / more noticable at speed in top gear, this it telling me it is gearbox related it also it more noticable during a very long run. for example when on a motorway, when gearbox oil is probably at its hottest, although my engine temps are fine based on scan gauge temp readings.

I don't do these journeys (over 100 miles on motorway) very often, in fact hardly at all.

My IQ has only done less than 1,500 miles since full Toyota service. that included spark plugs at my request.

I recon that if I took the car to Toyota they would test drive it and tell me there was nothing wrong so I believe that is a waste of time at the moment.

I am planning another similar journey in a couple of weeks and I will see then.

Based on your above post perhaps what I am hearing is "normal" for an Manual IQ ?

I lost a wheel bearing in one of my Fiat Panda 4x4s after a very long run from Aberdeen to Norfolk and back over a fortnights holiday. It did manifest itself as a whine that changed pitch based on car speed, which was not quite the sound I expected either. It didn't go away if you changed gear though, which ruled out the gearbox at least. It might have been a diff though, since the 4x4 has two fitted, but it turned out it was a failed bearing after I took it to Fiat for a checkup.

If you are able to safely jack the car up one corner at a time without the handbrake on or the car in gear and spin each wheel by hand you might just be able to detect by sound and or feel a rumbling or courseness in a bearing if one has gone. Chock the other three wheels somehow to stop the car moving though, for safety.

Best bet is probably still to take it to a reputable garage for a check up though I suppose :-)

My Yaris gets a fairly steady whine which manifests itself at constant speed, but not during acceleration or deceleration. I put it down to gearbox whine.

This sounds similar / same to what I am noticing

Back to my short (non motorway type runs) with my IQ, whine is gone again so it is related to:

Long runs, Motorway use.

Higher speeds. 60-80MPH

Potentialy higher gearbox temps

It's possible it always "Whined" under these circumstances as I hardly every do them, so I am going to ignore it unless it becomes noticeable during my "normal" use type of runs.

''as our car is in for a service on the 19th Sept, I will mention it to the service desk people. It is also having it's first front brake pad renewal. Will let you know any discoveries Bob from the service people.''

Okay, a bit late putting this on here. Car was serviced and front brake pads changed as scheduled. Mechanic took car for test run and made a note of a vibration in lower gears when accelerating. I was asked if I had detected this and said yes, I had, and that I thought it was a characteristic of the 3 cylinder engine, making the car vibrate. So, they said that as the car had been with them for a couple of hours, they would see what they can find out when it goes in for the MOT late October.

On another note I took my wife and her ex-sister in-law (they are best mates) to Birmingham Airport on Sunday in a 1.2 VW Polo. The noise was terrible, it's not the brand new model, and it has a private plate so without asking don't know the year. I mentioned this to her and she got all panicky, so didn't say anything else. Can't have her worrying about something whilst she's on her jollies. It sounded like what Bob and others said they think this whining noise is, either gearbox/transmission or a dodgy wheel bearing. I will say though, it's quite poky and has a lot of torque for a 1.2.

:driving:

Forgot to mention I also got our car taxed for the end of the month. Seems odd not getting something from Mr Posty to put on display for Mr Plod and nosy neighbours. Still, when nothing costs nothing, one can't complain.

Ive driven quite a few 1l manual IQs now and must admit, they are all a little whiney when running, particularly in 1st, some cars being worse than others, they all seem to have fairly noisy thrust bearings as well. I have put it down to the resonance and thickness in the castings.

If you are expecting diligence in the service department at Toyota, I wish you luck, my experience has not been good so far.

Fully agree about whine in 1st Gear, mine's the same, my "whine" I am talking about in this post is at higher speeds in top gear, (motorway driving and speeds).

Going on a long run tommorow, I will see if it is still doing it !
