2002 Hilux Lacking Acceleration

Hi there,

Been having this problem for a while now, thinking of changing up the years so have to get it sorted.

The problem is my 2002 Hilux starts fine, drives of fine but when you change gear and accelerate the engine bogs down. The only way around this is to clutch, give the engine a good rev , engine clears itself then you are free to drive on. This doesn't happen every time, but getting more and more frequent. Only happens after a gear change, never bogs down when you,re just driving. I have had air flow meter problems in the past ( wire into meter broke and had to be fixed). That was a few years ago, have put new air flow meter on, but hasn't cured my problem. Was told could be fuel filter, changed filter and seemed to make a bit of a difference even though old filter seemed to be fine and diesel inside looked perfect. Been told could also be the cat. Would appreciate your help guys, maybe someone else has had these problems to.

Thanks

I have the same vehicle, & the same problem. It's getting to the point now where I have to have a massive clearance before I pull out of a junction. Going up hill is a joke, am having to drop to 2nd gear.

Have changed air flow sensor ( made no difference). Changed fuel filter on Saturday, seems to have made a difference even though the old filter looked fine. Put a fuel additive into fuel tank also, meant to clean up the fuel lines, etc. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the reply's.

Do you run it to the bottom of the tank or have run out of diesel recently because it does suck up all kinds of crap into the fuel system and apart from getting lodged everywhere it can also damage the pump.

Dave, ref the top pic in your post. the rubber intake pipe from the air box, I have been taping mine with fabric tape. what do you reckon is an alternative fix without spending rediculous money on a genuine part and not taping? I regularly cross rivers with water reaching the pipe. luckily the tape keeps the water out and my 1kz hasn't sipped a drink. seems to be an all to common fault.

Sorry mate the photos were lifted from another forum but it would be worth asking the same question on the Surf forum

Rather than risk taking on water I`d be buying this one on eBay
