Test Drove New Peugeot 108 (Same As New Aygo) Today!

The new Aygo is not yet released in Sweden but the new Peugeot 108 is just released and here is my take on it after a brief drive within the city and the motor way (high way). drove it around for one hour and looked both in and out for another half hour.

What is good (compared to the previous Peugeot107/Aygo)?

1. The steering is more exact (more responsive) compared to the earlier Aygo that we have.

2. The car is more stable on the road and tends to wobble less at higher speeds.

3. The driver seat is much more comfortable and height can be adjusted.

4. It has more gimmicks like the infotainment system, DLR etc.

5. The boot is slightly bigger than the old Aygo and Peugeot 108 has done a good job with the self lifting cargo cover. It has a nifty mechanism! The new Aygo, I am told has an old type cargo cover.

6. the price is comparable to the out going model.

What is Bad (for a car that comes out in 2014 and comparing it to its rival VW UP, Hyundai new i10. etc)?

1. Terrible road noise, specially on Swedish roads with rough tar. All speeds above 100km/h were unbearable. This is a deal breaker for me! My old Aygo 2008, with DIY sound insulation is far quieter at those speeds. I noticed that the reserve wheel well and many bottom panels were bare metal as in the older Aygo. So it is no surprise why it is so noisy. I could hardly hear the radio program at that speed!

2. Still feels like you are driving a small, cheap car while the VW UP and Hyundai i10 feel more like a bigger car.

3. Cheap plastic dashboard.

4. The rear passenger space is limited and I wonder if the bigger boot has stolen some of that space. It is a pity that they could not increase the length by a few cm.

6. Most of the changes seem to be cosmetic changes or in the infotainment system. The engine and the chassis appear to be the same. I would consider it more as a face lift than a new model.

7. the engine needs more revving than the old Aygo. I do not know why!

I said to the dealer it's the same engine and chassis as the previous car as the measurements are the same. He said it was an entirely new car. What do others think? Here in the UK the price has risen significantly so that was the deal breaker for me. The trim inside seems a lot better than the original car though. Personally I feel you lose too much money on new cars so went for a luxury second hand car in the end so seeing if that works out better in the long run.

I think it's a re-skinned car, saw some photos of the underside of the new Aygo, and it looked very similar to my older model.

That's no bad thing as the old car was pretty good for a city car. Saw my first Aygo out and about today in white, Looked very nice. If they could just sort the price out.......

The Joint Venture (Toyota and PSA) have made no secret that the new Aygo/C1/108 is a development of the first generation Aygo/C1/107 - strengthened and more rigid body Shell, including more spot welds, different rake to the windscreen, carry over of an improved Toyota 1 litre engine, etc.

The current generation Auris is similarly a development of the first generation, and has even retained the Type Approval of the first generation.

I definitely agree that the body of the new Aygo is more rigid since it does not sag as much on corners while turning as the old Aygo did and is more stable on the road at higher speeds. There are some improvements but the main question is; is it enough after leading the small car segment for so many years? The competition is offering a lot more, in terms of driving pleasure (road presence, stability and noise reduction and equipment). Driving VW UP and the new Hyundai i10 was a real pleasure in comparison. I know what my next small car is going to be.

With the new Aygo being a development of the 1st generation, it won't need as long a production life as an all new design. Few small cars are 'all new' - the first generation i10 was based on the structure of the Getz for example - or manufacturers share platforms (eg the current Fiesta and Mazfa 2, the current Corsa and the Punto, etc).

I can understand using the original as it was good but why the price hike? I think they need to be under cutting the Up if it's to sell well. The i10 is a real bargain...... It's a shame as I really wanted the new Aygo but no city car is worth 10k plus in my eyes.

Think this has been more than adequately covered in previous topics.
