2002 Yaris Exhaust Noise

Hi All,

I've had a look through previous posts but I've not been able to find something similar, but apologies if its been answered before!

I have a very annoying issue with my exhaust. My exhausts makes an awful noise at idle and when revving. It sounds like one of those horrible scooters. It sounds as though it is coming from the backbox, so I had that changed but still no change in the issue. I went back and got a replacement backbox, and the supplier was happy to give me another under the warranty. Unfortunately, two new backboxes later it is still making the same noise and it is driving me mad!

So far, I've had the middle part of the exhaust replaced (the part after the cat that connects to the backbox), and the backbox itself a few times, but to no avail. One mechanic has mentioned that it could possibly be the cat converter. I wanted to know a faulty or just broken cat converter could cause such a noise before I went ahead and purchased a new one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I start a new job soon and certainly don't want to turn up in something that sounds like an awful boy racer!

If any other information or details are required please let me know!

Thanks,

Kashif

Logic tells me its either loose internals in a box, or part of the system touching some body work.

A good garage, I would of thought, would have been able to detect (perhaps not)

Seems strange a garage puts on a new back box, does'nt fix the problem, so takes it off and fits another new which, again, does'nt fix the problem.

A CAT is expensive will be expensive, so I perhaps would be going to a different garage for another opinion. They will see you have two new boxes on so look elsewhere for the problem (one would hope)

I agree with Cat lover, a decent garage should put the car on the ramp and rev the engine and detect the noise source. Sounds like you have a taken to a back street place.

I'm just a DIYer but easily found problems in son's Yaris exhaust system - took 5 minutes at most.

All you need is a competent garage,,, The people you are dealing with don't sound competent..

thanks for the replys guys, sounds like i need to go to a different garage asap! my thinking is i've replaced the middle piece of the exhaust and the backbox, so perhaps its the front piece? truth be told im just getting fed up with this and want it fixed :mad2: i've seen something about heatshields not been tight and possibly causing the problem.

also, as this is my first car i'm just learning about car maintenance so its all part of the learning curve for me, although my noobieness should be pretty blatant lol
