1998 Avensis Stereo Removal

Hi there,

I've very recently changed my car from a 1988 Celica to a 1998 Avensis (imminant baby forced sensible 5 door option).

I want to replace the standard 'Toyota' stereo in the Avensis with my Sony one which I had previously fitted in my Celica.

I can see that that the Avensis is similar to the Celica in that the stereo is 'embedded' behind the central dash, the difference being that the Avensis doesn't have obvious screws holding the dash together to allow eash dismantling.

Can anybody tell me a step by step guide to dismantling the dash of my Avensis in order to remove the stereo?

Searching this forum has yielded instructions for the more recent 2000 models but nothing for my older model.

Any comments or tips gratefully received!

Cheers,

Jonathan

No worries, done it on my 98

You need to get a slim screwdriver down the sides of the vents, pop them out gently, the rest of the central facia can be gently eased out from one side, not screwed in, just clipped, pull carefully tho, as the wires for the alarm etc will come out too.

Below and to the side of the vents, you should see the mounting screws/bolts for the radio, just unscrew them, and bobs your fathers sister, and just reverse to put new one in, although, you may need an adapter or are you getting someone to sort the wiring?

Hi Caergybirob,

Thanks very much for your reply. I assume when you say 'vents' you're refering to the air flow vents of the in car air conditioning/heating system? How many clips should I expect to have to loosen to get the facia off?

As for the wiring, I was kind of hoping that I would be able to reuse the adaptor that I purchased for fitting the Sony stereo in my Celica.

The adaptor for the Celica adapts from 'Toyota' style connectors to the standard euro style connector. Do you know whether the 'Toyota' connectors in my '88 Celica will be the same as the one's in the Avensis?

Cheers,

Jonathan

You take the center panel out by firstly removing the ashtray and then gently lifting up the center console fascia upward's from just above where you took the ashtray out if you get what i mean. Mine is a GLS though that came with a sony double din as standard and i replaced it with a alpine 9815 and the connector's matched for me

yep I do mean the air flow vents, sorry about that, as for the clips, dont worry about how many, they are part of the facia, and stay with it, so no worries about losing anything
