Anoying Banging Noise From Windscreen Wiper

Hi all, I have had 2 new front Wiper Blades fitted to my Rav, 3 weeks ago and since then when I am driving at 55 MPH or over the drivers wiper gives a loud bang just as it reaches farthest point of return. Now I have noticed the at slower speeds the blade is about 1.5 inches away from the outer edge of the screen, but at the higher speeds it is very close to the edge of the screen. Also the rubber on the blade doesn't seem to flip over on its return back down the screen. I have taken it back to my dealer yesterday and he replaced the drivers side wiper blade but it's still the same.

Has anybody else had this problem and know how to cure it ?

Thanks for reading.

Dave

May sound silly but ..................... are the plastic retaining clips pushed on the U bend on the end of the arm fully ?

Check where the wiper sits when they're switched off, it might be set too high. They're normally on a toothed spindle so the whole arm can be removed and re-set further down the screen if necessary. The mechanism could also be worn, allowing too much travel. Check gently how far you can move the wipers across the screen with them switched off, it should only be a few mm.

The rubber should be at right angles to the glass. If it's not you can try twisting the arm a little.

Also lift the wiper arm up and check the spring under the arm (the one which holds the wipers "standing up" for cleaning etc). If it's old/corroded then it might not be applying the correct down-force.

Hi Mick, yes the retaining clips are right home, thanks.

Hi Alan, been out and checked the free play and there is next to nothing there, also the spring looks quite good.

I am totally baffled.

Thanks for your replies.
