Avensis Tr Road Noise

I acquired my 2009 Avensis TR CVT in October last year with only 21,000 miles on the clock and have been very pleased with it. However, it does seem to suffer from excessive road noise and I'm wondering if the tyres are to blame. I'm assuming these are the original factory fitted tyres which are Pirelli 275/55 P17 94. Has anyone else had this problem and if so are there any particular brands of tyre which are better in this respect?

Do you mean 215/55/R17 94's?

Original fit were either Bridgestone Turanza ER300's, Goodyear Excellence or Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2's.

You could have a look at the tyre labelling of new tyres, but bear in mind the noise ratings are judged from outside the car, not inside.

Whoops, failing eyesight again! They are indeed 215/55/R17's. Also different front to back. Rear tyres are Bridgestone and the fronts are Pirellis. I wouldn't have thought the fronts would have been worn out at 21,000 so presumably one or both of the front ones was written off and replaced with the Pirellis. The car showed no signs of abuse and was immaculate when I purchased it. I did damage the n/s front tyreon a hidden kerb and told the dealer to replace it with the same as the o/s front. Noise does seem to be louder at the front but maybe that's always the case.

Tyres do make a difference. I tested two identical models when I bought my Avensis, both were low mileage ex Toyota cars but one had Bridgestone tyres and the other Goodyear Excellence. The Goodyears were far quieter than the Bridgestones. However I did buy the one with Bridgestone tyres because of colour preference. The Bridgestones only lasted around 16000 miles so now running Goodyear Efficient Grip which are quieter than the Bridgestones but not as quiet as the Goodyear Excellence.

As a further comparison our two previous cars were a 2004 Honda Accord and a 2009 Civic. I find the Avensis is far quieter than both.
