I know I am probably looking at getting a diagnostic check done :( but a few things to mention first.

car has done 96k

not had the air filter changed for a while

does use a bit of oil and idle speed will vary a bit in the morning. I thought I smelt a bit of petrol once come through the heater but it hasnt been consistent.

I have driven the car sensibly before the engine light came on (3k gear changes all the time) and I got 530/550 miles from a full tank.

Now, I will probably get about 450 - 480.

average mpg is reading about 36-38 while as before I think I had it to 41/42.

How do you reset the ecu after I have replaced the air filter and given it some redex?

if an injector is leaking, will it be obvious to see?

The light only came on tonight.

Thanks in advance :)

One other question, what is the best way to clean the MAF whilst I am changing the air filter?

The engine light came on after some heavy acceleration in 2nd gear if that sheds any light on things.

How longs a while? over 10,000?

leave the negative Battery lead off for 30 minutes.

any electrical contact cleaner or a MAF cleaner will do.

It needs to be plugged to get an idea where to start.

Code reader's are cheap enough to buy from the internet and may come handy in the future.

Thanks

Thank you for the info :)

Yes, my father owned the car before me and it lacked any service for a while, definitely over 10k since it was changed. I hope to change it tomorrow and then reset the ecu.

I also noticed a smallish soft pipe split near the throttle cable this morning, I will get that looked at too at the same time with a temporary fix.

It did 450 miles on its last tank, now I've put some redex in.... I've had 550 before.

High, (cold) idle was 1450/1400rpm.

The air filter, redex and sensor clean didn't resolve it.

Took to a garage and the exhaust sensor had failed (lamda I suspect, I don't think there's another?) so it's being replaced.

fingers crossed :)

  • 2 weeks later...

So, the left hand exhaust sensor got replaced.

now the engine light is back again after about 300/400 miles, but flashing this time and the car is not working on all cylinders.

going to be an expensive month :(

Any ideas what to look for?
