New To Toyota And Help Needed

Hi everyone i am new to the forum and i have just bought my first toyota.

A 2010 rav4 2.2d with 88000 on the clock. i have a couple of questions that are concerning me, the turbo whistle and operation of the turbo seems to be louder than previous cars i have had, plus when in neutral there seems to be a slight rumble from the gearbox that disappears totally when the clutch is pressed, it is only very slight though, i am gonna change the gearbox oil and diff oil this week to see if that helps but i cannot find any info on the amounts needed.. I'm very sorry to bombard you with questions but it seems that people here are very knowledgable and i would be very grateful for your input.

cheers guys

The turbo can whistle - difficult to advise without hearing it. Whistling can be caused by general wear and tear but often can result from leaks, loose joints and clips so check over the turbo carefully. Key thing for turbos is regular engine oil and filter changes using good quality parts and lubricants. A rumble which disappears when the clutch is pressed is often from the release bearing - not unusual. The gearbox holds about 2.1 litres and the rear diff and transfer box around 0.5 litres each. It's very important to use only a 75W monograde gear oil in this gearbox - use of multigrades will affect gear changes.

cheers guru, i was also going to use activ8 oil additive also as i have used this in the recent engine oil change and have done so for years, i also changed the air filter to a k&n hi flow filter, not because I'm a boy racer but because they last longer and give better mpg. yes the turbo makes a hiss noise when the accelerator is released after accelerating

Yes the gear oil you indicate is fine. The Castrol equivalent may be a bit cheaper

K&N filter have less resistance than a paper filter but the downside is that filtration efficiency isn't as good and they do increase induction noise - some Rav owners have changed back to paper because of the increased noise.

I would avoid using any additives with transmission oils - good quality gear lubricants of the correct spec are already formulated to meet car manufacturers requirements and some additives can cause problems.

would i use the same oil for all three applications e.g.: gearbox, transfer box and rear diff??? thanks once again for your replies

The gearbox uses 75W gear oil spec API GL4. The diff and transfer box use 85W90 gear oil spec API GL5. There are service sheets for all Rav models in the pinned Technical Section together with several maintenance topics - worth taking a look.
