:cowboy: Hi all,

does anyone have a step by step (or dummy's guide) procedure for changing the fluid?

And what is the best product to use.

I did a quick search but didn't come up with anything suitable

Use a good quality Dexron III (Dexron three) fluid. With the wheels straight ahead - syringe out the contents of the reservoir. Remove the fluid pipe connections either side of the rack and allow to drain. Without starting the engine - move the steering wheel from side to side a couple of times. Reconnect and refill up to the max mark. Start the engine, allow to idle for a few minutes and check the fluid level. Drive the car on open ground moving the wheel from lock to lock slowly a couple of times. Re- check the level when cold.

This procedure is generally adequate but doesn't drain the system entirely. This would require much more dismantling and would only be required if the fluid was badly contaminated eg topped up with some other fluid.

Sorry - should read Dexron - used as an Automatic Transmission Fluid

  • 3 years later...

not long after the original post, the car went in for a major 60k service at toyota dealr.

service guy said the PS fluid is for life and not changed as a routine maintenance. Is this true???
