I have a 1999 Avensis with a 7A-Fe engine, the other morning the car refused to start which I quickly tracked down to a lack a ignition spark, I tested the obvious and have found that there is 1 volt coming out of the cam sensor and nothing coming out of the crank sensor, my question is before I pay £80 for a new one is should the crank sensor be giving a voltage output. Any help gratefully received. Graham.

I cannot answer the question regarding the voltage to the sensors, but have you checked all the fuses? I assume you covered this during your tests. There are more than one fuse dealing with ignition and fuelling of the car.

You don't need to spend £80 on the sensor. have you tried breakers yards?

Thank you for your reply, but I was looking to find out what sort of voltage if any should be coming from the crank sensor, as I'm getting 1 volt ac from the cam sensor but a zero reading from the crank sensor. Have tried a few scrap yards and parts finder sites and they are wanting around the £50 mark for a used part which could be of doubtful quality but have found a new one for £80.

I looked at some pdfs on my storage drive, and found that both cam and crank sensors have the same specifications.

The resistance is measured.

12_IGNITION.pdf

Go to 'IG-5' and you will find the details.

I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for the info Konrad, have gone through the flow chart that you sent me and there is power to the low side of the igniters (coils), good resistance on the cam sensor and an open circuit on the crank sensor. So have ordered the part and will report back in a few days. Thank you once again. Graham.
