You know what, you're probably 100% right. Those old valve sets definitely had a pleasant 'tone' about them which is difficult to describe unless you've heard one. DAB is just too harsh, too tinny and in the most part mono. At least DAB+ addresses some of that, but not in the UK :(

The DAB radio fitted as standard on my New Yaris Sport gives an excellent reception of loads of radio stations both local and national and is equal to if not better than FM reception

Prior to purchase I had doubts that it would....but performance has far exceeded my expectations :)

In the flat lands of Cambridgeshire I'm sure it'll be fine. Picking up all those masts from London nice and easily, no hills to speak of either.

If you have hills like up here then it's not so good. FM would splutter but was still listenable, dab burbles dreadfully and cuts out. I also think 'they've' given up on DAB in that the BBC promised a mast near me back in 2007 and it keeps getting delayed. It would cover the vale of York and about 500,000/1 million people so not small fry. And there are other similar places around the UK who are still waiting too.

We could get onto the technicalities of DAB in that most stations are transmitted in a quality below that of fm and many stations are in mono. Some (talk stations) even compress to the quality just above a mobile phone call. Technically you could have better than CD quality sound from DAB but they've decided to cram 10 stations into the same space to lower costs and the casualty of that was sound quality and error correction in poor signal areas.

Oh, and there are only a handful of countries that use DAB. Other than the USA and Canada who have their own system, the rest of the World has adopted DAB+. I would happily support DAB+. That does give better than CD sound with more stations and better error correction to work in poorer signal areas such as in areas with hills.

I'm no luddite but I do feel DAB (not DAB+) is an obsolete dead end being pushed by the BBC to avoid paying compo to all the people who have bought one of those dreadful, wooden, Roberts dab radios at £130 a pop.

Totally agree; DAB was like the 'test' version, and despite promising the moon it had some major shortcomings that are typical of something that was only tested in a controlled environment.

They fixed almost all the problems with it in DAB+, but why the government have blocked its adoption here is beyond me!

As an aside to that......The Toyota DAB radio in my Yaris has an ability to auto switch to FM broadcast signal should the DAB signal deteriorate........It also has an ability to "rewind" by increments of 10 seconds when in DAB mode
