Removing The Head - 3Sgte

Hi

I'm new to the site and joined as I need some help removing the head from my 1991 GT4.

A couple of years ago it started burning coolant and overheating. After replacing numerous hoses, all cooling sensors, the radiator, the radiator cap, the thermostat (I've ended up removing that altogether now) and the electrics for the fan, I decided that I had a much bigger problem.

I had 'the test' which showed that I had a cracked head, so set about removing it.

My mechanic skills are fairly limited (as are my tools!)...the car is in my girlfriend's garage. Her patience is wearing thin since its been there since last November. Yes, a year ago.

So far I have removed:

  • the alternator
  • cam belt (cam shafts, I understand can stay)
  • turbo
  • exhaust manifold (actually pushed the car across the road to a conveniently located mechanic with a lift for this bit!)
  • head cover
  • the ten bolts holding the head in place

I understand that inlet manifold should lift off with the head, so I have not tried to unbolt this. That said, I cannot access the back of it, anyway.

I have disconnected most electrics, including the distributor.

The head has moved about a millimetre, but will not come off. I have no idea what else to do. The engine is still in the car.

Can anyone help?

Last bit of info - I moved to Australia about 15 years ago and the car came with me, so I don't really want to scrap it. It is in immaculate condition...apart from not actually driving!

The engine is stock standard and has never been rebuilt - I've had it for about 20 years.

Look forward to some help, esp pictures if anyone has any which would help.

Thanks

Kevin
