55 Plate D4D 5Th Gear Pop Out - Returned? Help

Hi All,

Just signed up to the forum as I am need of a bit of help with the wife's car.

When we bought it about 5 months ago I noticed the common problem of the gear lever moving backwards and forwards when on and off the throttle in 5th gear. Annoyingly I didn't notice it whilst test driving it before buying - but that's in the past.

Anyway last month it started to pop out of gear whenever you put it into 5th. So I had the 5th gear done, my dad is a mechanic so we did it got the genuine toyota parts and easily followed the guides available on the net.

That seemed to sort the problem no movement of the lever in 5th. However the other day I jumped in the car and the gear lever is slightly moving under throttle again when in 5th. No where near as bad but I can only guess it will get worse. The car hasn't even done 800miles yet.

Obviously I am a bit annoyed! Phoned up toyota again who supplied the parts for the job and they have admitted there is another bulletin internally that says there is another problem with 5th gear classed as Vibration and its a separate issue to the 5th gear popping out. Apparently the parts alone a over £700+Vat and its a box off job.

I was wondering has anyone heard of this is it correct? Has anyone else done the 5th gear replacement and had the movement of the lever come back again.

I am after a bit of advise because its going to cost me a fortune to get this sorted if I have to go down the path of sorting this "Vibration" problem. Shall I just live with the lever moving and hope it doesn't get worse?

I done mine some 25,000 miles ago as it was vibrating badly but didn't pop out, replaced the parts with genuine toyota parts and mine has started to vibrate again recently at certain speeds, really anyonning as not cheap to fix . Going to live with mine until it pops out this time. I tried replacing the bushes on the linkage where it goes into top of gear box, no difference, then found play in the end of the cables where they fit to the gear linkage on gear box, rubber bushes with metal insert, but you can,t buy separate you have to buy cables complete at cost of £160.00 !!

Mine vibrates around 60 mph where as before was around 40-50 mph. Poor design.

When you talk about vibrating what do you mean. I wouldn't really say mine is vibrating. Gear lever doesn't seem to vibrate or wobble just moves in the direction of front and back of the car when on and off the throttle. I.e on and off load. It happens at any speed but the lever doesn't really vibrate ever. I think I am going to phone toyota and complain as I would expect their brand new parts to last longer than 800 miles!

Mine don,t moved forward or back. It vibrates, I.e. You can hear it chattering away and if you place your finger on top of gear knob you can feel it vibrating, if you hold gear knob it stops. Like I said mine has now done 25k since I replaced the 5 th gear , yours should last at least the same. My fault now is the same as I had before but not as bad. Hope this helps in some way.

Yer mine definitely doesnt vibrate like that the lever physically moves. Hopefully it will last that long but I doubt it considering its started moving again already. Thanks for the help - its really appreciated!

No worries, I,m really annoyed mine has started again so you must be well hacked off. By the way mine started doing it at around 51k and now has done 77k.

There is a vibration problem in 5th on some Ravs which isn't associated with jumping out of gear and it doesn't sound as if your car is suffering from this particular issue. I wouldn't be overly concerned about slight fore and aft movement of the gear stick - lots of 4.2's have this and it doesn't get any worse. It's possible to reduce the movement by adjustment of the gear cables. I doubt if you'll get any joy from Toyota and I'd be inclined not to do anything - certainly until you've covered a few thousand miles. I suspect that if you stripped 5th gear again - you wouldn't find anything amiss.

Is there anything that can be done to cure the vibration problem ? Find it annoying. I know there is play in the rubber bushes at the end of the cables but you can't buy them separate from cables. Replaced bushes on the linkage which is bolted to top of gearbox but still vibrates, have tried various pieces of packing under cables in centre consol but still does it.

I might just have to wait and see but i am certain it will go again as i said previously when the 5th gear was first replaced it didnt move and now its started to. This can only mean that it will get worse surely.

Which end of the gear cables would I look at btw?

My bushes are worn at the end of cables which connect to the gearbox it self, inside engine compartment. Held on to linkage with a small r clip. If you move gear lever you can see movement before play taken up. Like I say replaced the bushes on the linkage itself which is bolted to top of gearbox but can't buy the bushes for the cable ends. Still not sure if there is a cure for the vibration problem.
