Engine Light Goes On And Off On 98 Toyota Avensis 1,6 Petrol

Hello, my check engine lamp goes on and off during driving, mostly when it have a little resistance and rpm is over 3000

After shorting the ODB connector i get the following code:Toyota 58 ECD Intake Manifold Runner Control Circuit / Open (Bank 1) OR SCV Control Circuit

Engine is running quite fine but feels like less power and runs uneasy when the lamp is on.

Anyone that knows anything about this?

At a guess it sounds like a fault in a switch related to the vacuum system.

The vacuum system controls the inlet manifold butterfly valves to each of the 4 inlets. This can effect the running, as you said.

The following may not be correct but put you on the right track.

If you click on some of the numbers, a description will appear.

Did go to the toyota garage to ask for help, they could not even get any error code from the ODB, one said it could be the ecu or the distributor, any thoughts on this ?

The code i did get myself was from shorting 4-13 on the ODB and then counted the flashes from the abs light. Code 58

It depends on what kit they used because if they used a system that is OBD2 only, it will not be compatible.

You only just said ABS and did not mention that before.

Anyway I found this: - http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/147618-abs-code-58-1996-carina-e-16/

This is from the Carina forum but may still apply to the Avensis.

Short the OBD pins again to go into test mode, then press the brake pedal 8 times in less than 3 seconds. This should clear the ABS code.

Drive the car as normal to see if the issue is there. If so then it points to the brake light switch. The link explains all.

Thank you so very much That was amazing, i did like you said and deleted the code, tested the car right after and it runs like normal again, no engine light or bad performance.

Thank you again, im am so impressed, dont understand the connection though

Neither me about the connection. I was advising to remove the code to see if it reoccurs. I did not think it will fix the issue to be honest.

Let us know in a few days time if the car is still fine.
