Keyfob Stopped Working

Had an odd situation this morning. Drove about 20 miles and then stopped for petrol. Locked the car as normal to go and pay and when I returned about 2 minutes later the remote keyfob wouldn't open the car. The little red light on the fob flashed every time I pressed the unlock button, but nothing happened!

I tried to use the key in the drivers door lock, but oddly that didn't seem to want to go in more than about halfway - this key is the one I've used since I got the car but I didn't want to force it.

After 5 minutes of fruitless attempts, the fob suddenly started working and I was in! Started and drove away with no problems apart from a slightly annoyed queue of people at the petrol station.

Is this possibly the sign of failing batteries in the remote? And has anyone used their key in the drivers door lock? I always thought that was an option, unless my door locks have been changed and I've got the full history of the car and even know the previous owners so I don't think thats ever been done.

If the remote Battery hadn't been changed for a while I'd start there. Also the door locks can get a bit stiff if they're not used. Try some wd40 and a bit of wiggling.

Agree with the above.

Also some systems can be overwhelmed by local radiation (radio etc) which may have swamped your remote's signal..

But change batteries first.. and clean out all the dirt which will have accumulated over years of use and may interrupt electrical contact.

Batteries should be changed every 2 years. Unused locks will crud up and it's not unknown for idiots to push objects into car locks. Use electrical contact cleaner spray on the lock - don't use lubricants. Garage forecourts are notorious for electronic interference from telemetering equipment and other electronics.

Cheers, I'll change the Battery anyway as they're only pennies.

It was a garage I use on a weekly basis - and sadly I usually end up using the same pump! Never had that problem before though.

I'll get the WD40 out tomorrow for a good clear out of the lock then.

Had my spare remote fob Battery changed yesterday at the dealers for a very reasonable £5. Took all of 5 mins & it works as normal :)
