I'm new to this site,

I bought my T180 three weeks ago, and i am very pleased with it.

It came with one key, so i booked it in with my local dealer, to get a spare done. The service manager then came out to say i've got some bad news for you, your car is showing advance signs of head gasket failure! (I've only done 561 miles since i bought it !) they advised it would need a new toyota replacement engine, as you cannot replace the head gasket, with a cost of approx £2600 plus labour....

My car has just turned : 106000, (07 PLATE) and doesn't run hot, doesn't seem to have any performance issues, coolant seems clean, i did 361 miles from where i bought it, with no problem at all, it doesn't seem to be losing coolant, though i'm now checking daily....

I've been reading this forum, ref warranty, which some people have experienced head gasket failure.

Can any one clarify or advise me where i can find out if my car is covered by any kind of warranty??

its got service history, but not all at toyota garages.

I'd be grateful of any help anyone can give me on my matter.

Andy

The following gives details on the goodwill assistance Toyota extended to cars with these engines and head gasket issues: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/132178-charliefarlies-guide-to-the-toyota-2ad-diesel-engine-and-its-issues/

The period of goodwill covers cars up to 7 years old or 111,846 miles, whichever occurs first - so it depends when your car was first registered as to whether the goodwill is still current or has expired.

If your car is older than 7 years, and you bought it from a dealer, I would approach that dealer re repairs under whatever warranty the car came with.

Did you buy your car privately or from a business? If from a dealer/trader you should be covered by them as it was obviously a pre-existing condition & therefore not of merchantable quality. If from a private individual you won't have that to fall back on.

But you should be able to use the "Sale of goods act" to reject this car! Or take the seller to small claims court. I bet they knew the issues it had when they sold it you! But no doubt they will say they didn't. ..

If the car is within the Toyota extended goodwill warranty then you will pay nothing for a new engine! Provided you can show "Reasonable" service record. If it has already had an engine replaced under said scheme and outside the 12 month manufacturers warranty, then you would not be eligible for another engine.

You need to ask some searching question from either the seller or dealer to find out the registration date and what warranty (If any) has been carried out.

Good luck with it...
