Always first check with the DVLA as already mentioned.

Yeh, when I was looking for my plate, there were a few companies like Regtransfers and some others that wanted to sell it me for about £800, and I'd also have to pay the £79 registration fee on top of that, but I stumbled across the DVLA site and the plate was still available for £250 with the £79 fee included. How %$(in' cheeky's that!
