New to the forum, have myself a Avensis d4d on a 57 plate, over the past few weeks it has become more difficult to start in the morning from cold, Having to press the accelerator enabling it to tick over for the first few seconds, sometimes having to try a second time~! It always kicks in the second time if needed and starts on the button every single time during the day one started, its just from stone cold.. Any ideas people? I have read about the coolant temp sensor???

Cheers

I had a similar problem a few years ago with a 58 2.2 D4D but only in very cold weather, I was caused by the garage that was servicing it using the wrong oil, it was too thick on cold mornings. putting the correct grade oil in cured it.

Hi

Had a similar problem on my 57 d4d 2.0. Try running on V power for a bit and the problem may go away.

Toyota suggested I put there fuel additive in the tank. Anyway, using V power solved it for me. You could also try putting the glow plugs on, wating for a few seconds, turning it off and then turn the glow plugs on , wait a few seconds and then start the engine. Having said that, cold weather will always make it a bit more difficult to start the car.

Hope this helps

Best Wishes

Thanks for all your replies gents, Like I said it itsnt that bad always goes on the button on the second time, as for the glow plugs i am not sure, as it fires and runs for few seconds but fails to idle, pressing the accelerator does help it tick over.Would just like to get to the bottom it, few people have said the temp coolant senor, once running for a few seconds it picks up and ticks over around 1100, could it be the ecu is getting an incorrect reading from the temp senor .

Cheers Gents

Throttle body might need a clean. That normally sorts out eratic idle issues. Same with EGR.
