year 2005, 2.2 D4D. its getting cold outside and engine keeps running with 1200rpm idle till it reaches working temperature about 88 degrees then it drops back to normal 800rpm. i am wondering is it normal to idle in such high revs for so long, shouldnt revs drop sooner before engine havent heated up fully? in summer it was 800rpm idle

Perfectly normal in cold weather especially if you have AC or Heater on as the cars priority is:

1. To get the engine up to temp as soon as possible

2. Give you the heat/AC you are wanting.

Yeah my petrol 7AFE 1.8 does the same now it is cold out, revs it's heart out till it gets warm. Drive off as soon as possible and it warms up quicker.

thanks - I too thought it was funny as you could control the revs with the heater thermostat when cold... lol - thanks for the update
