Hybrid Extended Warranty

My two-year extended warranty is due to expire end of January 2015, and the car needs to be serviced first week of January so may as well kill two birds with one stone.

From the Toyota website:

"Is there a choice of warranties?

You have the choice of either the unlimited mileage
cover or the low user option that restricts to 10,000 miles per year.
You also have a choice between 12 or 24 months cover
(subject to vehicle eligibility). The 24 month option will show a saving
over two 12 month Toyota Extended Warranty policies and is available
with the low user option at 10,000 miles per year over 24 months."

The garage offered to do me the extended warranty at £780 for two years (10k limit on mileage). After some light pressure they reduced this to £750. When I then asked about the '24 months cover for 20 months' which I believe there was last time I renewed, the garage said there was no such deal available.

Without getting into the discussion right now on whether it's worth it or not, has anybody had a different price offered? I just wanted to check with you guys that this is the best deal I can get!

Thanks

valmiki

Hmmm...thanks for that, maybe I should shop around a little

If you do just make sure they fully cover the hybrid side - in writing.

Many cheaper non manufacturer warranties might not, or have crazy servicing requirements etc. Just go in with your eyes wide open.

Yeah I've heard no end of bad stories about non-manufacturers warranties! I'm tempted to phone a few dealers further afield and try and get a deal ;-)

My experience of Toyota's 'branded' extended warranty was terrible - even my dealer couldn't believe how they behaved - see explanations here:

I looked at third party extended warranties at the time, but they all specifically excluded batteries, including the HV Battery, but with the HV Battery annual check potentially extending Toytoa's warranty on that into the 11th year, it's not such a worry now.

My car is still under 3 years old, so it won't worry me for a couple more years, and maybe the outsourced Toyota warranty has improved over the years, but until recently I was thinking of just saving the equivalent cost of the warranty and keeping the HV Battery warranty alive.

However, recent rumours that Toyota Customer Services are taking a harder line on goodwill repairs on things that shouldn't have failed means I'll have to think about it further when the time comes (if I haven't switched to something else by then).

That reflects my experience. They were really great with me but Mrs Cabbie is having no end of trouble with her IQ automatic transmission and getting nowhere with the dealers. I'm guessing as they're an expensive part that HQ don't want to replace it, even though it's still in warranty.

No point having a 5 year warranty if the manufacturers are getting cold feet in years 4 and 5. The 5 year warranty is either costing Toyota too much or they have some new bean counters at HQ. But I'm struggling to find positives with them these days.

  • 2 weeks later...

£700 for 24 months ... low mileage option.

They couldn't bill it as such so I was billed for £750 (DD @37.5 for 20 months) and given a rebate note for £50 for anything I needed done. Used it a few weeks later when I had our IQ serviced!

I realized I could have haggled for more (cash or kind) when I took the IQ for MOT and servicing to the dealer. The service manager asked me if I had got the (2) MOTs included in the extended warranty deal ..... oops, no! and he winked!! No more dealing with anyone else at that dealership other than the service manager. Lesson learnt!!

Ha ha, lesson learnt indeed lol. Only shame is I'd be 70 before I reap the rewards of all my life lessons!

As it turns out my dealer offers free MOTs with each service (which is nothing new in my experience), but then it probably reduces the amount of 'checks' they do each time and helps service the car quicker
