Starter motor may be on the brink of failing.

I agree with Gary.

If the starter is not engaging properly and does this intermittently, I would look to get the starter motor replaced or reconditioned. If the starter is turning the engine over as normal but not starting, then look at the crank sensor.

If you are doing the work yourself, ramps will be handy as the lower bolt is easier to access from below. When I did the work last year, it was summer/autumn, and I had my starter reconditioned at a local starter motor specialist who was walking distance. Sourcing a replacement starter is not too difficult.

Lets hope you fix the issue.

Can I add a slight variation to the video. There is more room in the Avensis, and the air filter and induction pipes are left in place.

I loosen the upper bolt first then work on the bottom bolt totally remove it. I also undo the cable nuts, but due to the access below, I prefer to do the disconnection above. Then I remove the top bolt and lift the starter motor, then remove the nut and disconnect the terminal cables.

When refitting the starter motor, I find it easier to connect the cables first and tighten the nut, then install the starter using the top bolt. The power cables can also be done underneath. Just personal preference. Then underneath I fitted the bottom bolt and tighten.

Even though the starter motor is located behind the motor it is not too difficult. Oh remember to disconnect the negative terminal before starting the work!
