215 47 17 Wheels Downgrading To 205 55 16 Over Winter And Maybe Longer

I am looking to downgrade my alloys due to the tyre size now costing a lot more and there is a bigger range in 205 55 16 as this is apparently UK's most common tyre size.

I know the t2 t3-s t3-x come standard in 16". and the t4 and t spirit come as 17" in the 2003-2006 avensis.

Can I do a straight swap or does anything need to be calibrated?

Are they 215/45/R17's?

According to the following site - http://www.alloywheels.com/Tyre_Calculator

when you input 215/45/R17 into the 'Tyre Size' boxes, there is a +0.92% difference and the speedometer will read 70.64 mph compared to the car wearing it's original tyres reading 70mph - which seems to be acceptable and without the need for re-calibration

Versions of the Auris also use 205/55/R16 tyres on 16 inch wheels - both my 2009 and my current 2012 Auris had/have this size.

Might be as well to inform your insurer of the change.

You will also need to inform your insurance company (it will be a modification) who may adjust your premium.
