New Auris Squealing Brakes

Had an Auris for 3 years with no problems so changed for a new one 2 weeks ago, Auris icon+ hybrid. Everything fine except for an annoying loud brake squeal when coming to a stop such as traffic lights. Never had this before (I have had 5 new Toyotas), but a friend who bought the same model car a month ago also has this problem.

Dealership says to let the brakes bed in, the compound has been changed and they will squeal. WHAT !!!! It sounds like the pads need renewing not brand new with 350 miles on the clock.

Phoned Toyota and they said they were not aware of this. Again WHAT !! Google it and there are loads of complaints.

What do I do folks. No-one seems to be interested. Do I indeed have to bear the embarrassment of squealing to a halt or can I demand that the braking system be changed or overhauled.

Thanks

Ask them to put some copper grease on the back of the pads,it might help.

Or really give the brakes a workout with some high speed stops etc really warm them up.

I wouldn't be fobbed off with a load of BS.

Brake squeal was a relatively common issue on the first generation Auris, and having done some web searches, most results were for the first generation. Have seen one result for a 2013 Auris.

The reason disc pads squeal is because the pad lining material is too hard so you need a softer material, Pagid pads are softer than the ones fitted as standard and you don't really want to use Copperslip, there is a more suitable product called Ceratec. The squeal occurs in the same way like when you run your finger around a wine glass and a resonation effect happens. Toyota used to use a lining material made in Germany called Textar, it seems like they are sourcing their brake material from another source which appears to be harder which in turn makes them squeal. Of course you shouldn't have to research what pads should be fitted to your car. Some pads have anti squeal shims and clips fitted as standard, of course make sure they are all in place. If Toyota have changed the model and in turn fitted harder pads then this could be why they are squealing, a softer pad that wears our more quickly and of course stops the car more quickly may be a better option.

give it another week, if it still happens after some high speed braking then take it back to the dealer and tell em you paid £12k plus on a car which has squeeling brakes? tell them you do not want it and you will be informing trading standards about this issue if no action is taking against it. You'll soon see them come to a quick conclusion :flowers:

Squealing disc brakes have been around for ages. They were said to be caused by the flat pads contacting the disc surface and inducing high pitched harmonics that manifested themselves as squeals due to the bell shape of the discs. Drum brakes sometimes suffered from squeal too but one cure was to stretch a strong spiral steel spring around the outside of the drum. Drum brake systems with true twin leading edge shoes were not so prone.

The problem was how to tilt the pads to give a leading and trailing edge effect. They couldn't tilt the calliper pistons and the answer was to introduce special steel shims between the pistons and the pads. It was only a few thou but it did achieve the leading / trailing edge effect.

One comic suggested that disc castings should be done by a bell foundry where they could machine out contrasting major dominants and sub-dominants to cancel out the squeals but since there was only one bell casting foundry left in the UK (in Loughborough I believe) they couldn't handle the load.

Follow up information. Car went into workshops yesterday, 2 hrs later came out - no fault found.

Brakes still squealing possibly worse than before. Informed that the brake pads were wearing too fast on previous models and this year the compound was changed and now squealing brake pads.

So the dealership knows this. Lots of Auris 2014 sold and only a couple of complaints so most people are happy.

Now I am going to look into the reason why this information was not divulged to me before I made a purchase of £20,000.

There was no sticker on the windscreen saying "May contain noisy brakes"

Rant over, but I hope I'm still suitably unimpressed when I ask to speak to the main man on Monday

So the dealership says No Fault Found eh? Get into their ribs, Roger, you've bought five new Toyotas so if you're not a valued customer then I don't know who is. From what you describe the car is unacceptable to you - and it would be unacceptable to me as well - so it's now a matter of how forcibly you argue your case.

When I took delivery of a new Auris in 2009 I found the brakes and wheel nuts were in a shocking state as you can see by the attached photos Remember this is the car at one week old. I went back to the dealers and complained so they had a look at it in the workshop and said they'd skim the discs. Then we all had a serious discussion and guess what, they decided that maybe it wasn't such a good idea to skim my discs, that it would be a much better idea to fit new discs, pads and wheel nuts instead.

Best of luck Roger, illegitimi non carborundum.

When I told my dealer about the squealing brakes, he replaced them on warranty. He admitted it was a well-known problem the default compound is wrong and when an owner indicated squealing, he replaces them right away. However, I live in the Netherlands.

If I were you, I would demand new pads.

Eureka !!!! My Auris is braking SILENTLY.

The dealership have replaced all the brake pads for the Pagid ones as suggested on here earlier and I picked it up this afternoon with slight trepidation because it was at my insistence that they used these pads so if it hadn't cured the problem I was going to look a bit of a fool.

When I drove it in this morning each use of the brakes caused a real metallic sounding grinding terminating with a high pitched squeal. Now she is coming to a halt silently (just like a good woman should !!)

Thank you forum for your successful advice.

Ohhhhhh i love a happy ending and pleased the advise given turned out to be all good. Now all you have to do is the odd 'emergency stop' when there are no cars behind you, it deglazes the top layer of the pad, yes i know it wil make them a fraction of a millimeter thinner but will remove the hard outer exterior layer that can develop if you are light footed on the brake pedal most of the time and keep the lining material softer and therefore keep the pads as you want them............................SILENT!

Regards Mike.

RE: Squealing noises/screeching noises from front wheels.

Changed the pads (again) on the front - this time they are Pagids - and would u believe it still makes squealing noises - can’t understand whats is wrong with this stupid car, at my wits end.

mechanic says that it could maybe be the shims? So now i’ll have to try the main Toyota dealer.

Anybody elses got any ideas what is causing this? Front discs were changed 3 weeks ago - still good condition.

How easy do the pads go in the carrier ?

They should side back and forth easy  if not they will do that

I just had to do my rear brakes for the same reason.

Didn't fit new pads or discs but no squeaking 🙏🏻

I took the rear pads out that was part seized I may add.

Removed the carrier but in the vice and removed the pad fitting shim.

Your see thick black paint stuck to the carrier file this off and any rust.

Do the same to the pad fitting shim back side and where the pad comes into contact. Refit all parts removed.

I do it at work most days happens to all makes

Also on side of the pads file a little edge on the bit that comes into contact with the  disc. If they have to much paint on this will make it squeak. I’ll post a picture Tuesday when I get back to work of what I mean.

If you don’t get me.

Update- on my squealing wheels - it turned out to be badly worn pads on the rear!!

Even the mechanic thought it was coming from the front when driving,  funny how the noise stopped when you brake though.

all quiet now..
