Toyota Yaris (05 Reg - 50K Milage) Rear Wheel Bearing...

Hi,

i've recently purchased my Yaris (had it for 2 months), and asof last week got it fully serviced to ensure I keep up to things. When i got it back, everything was fine and dandy until a couple of days later my brakes were extremely spongey and on the way home I heard a grinding noise from my passenger rear wheel when slowing to a stop (only when stopping not whilst slowing mid-speed)

Originally i thought it was a flat; pulled over got out and nothing wrong. Took it back to the mechanic after it continued and he bled the system, told me the front brake pad was rubbing slightly and corrected and I was starting to get a rear passenger side wheel bearing issue(this was NOT picked up in my service?) He drove it around and apparently had no issues, but after driving home today from work, and pulled onto my street the noise is back there again and this time not only when i brake and slow down but whenever i'm at a slow speed.

So i'm guessing my bearing is going/gone. How much does it cost to repair this as i've read some posts on the internet and i'm extremely concerned!

If anyone has some thoughts it'd much greatly greatly appreciated. The problem has only just started and wondered how long it would last due to the xmas period too..

could be rear brake pads/shoes wearing thin, they would make a noise when braking.

Brake pads (if rear discs fitted) are easy to check - even with the wheel in situ. Brake linings difficult to see without taking wheel off and looking into the brake assembly.

If it is brake pads/linings it needs seeing to straight away - metal to metal will not give good braking effect and can cause a lot of damage meaning greater costs in the long run.

Basically change it asap. My old Hyundai had it changed 6 times! Yes 6 times!!!!!!! But it was so reliable over 150k trouble free miles so dont blame it. Back to the topic well I was lazy and thought nothing will happen. When I originally had it checked out by mechanic he told me wheel will fall off and I burst into laughter infront of him because it did not sound true. About 1k miles later wheel fell off before joining motorway and luckly nothing happen. 500 yards more and it woul of been a massive fatal collision on motorway at 70 MPH. The wheel will fall off eventually and is not safe at all. I had the loud sound and completely ignored it not only did the wheel fall off but it had made so much friction that it melted a bolt before falling off which meant I had to find a incredibly hard part which main dealer sold me for £30+ if I remmber correctly for a small bolt. Get it changed and it will be cheap about £100 labour and materials all in maximum.

Also if the sound comes at 40 MPH + its bearings, just have em replaced £67.00 rear bearing and front bearing is £37.00 for my Yaris which is 1999 model off EuroCarParts.com (really cheap and good parts website, you can pick up part from your local branch). I actually used to put the front wheel bearing into the rear wheels because it was cheaper (on Hyundai there was £150 gap between front wheel bearing and rear) and nothing happens but I dont reccomend it.
