Stepper Motor For Turbocharger?

Hi

Had to call the AA out to my breakdown earlier today - Diesel Rav 4 lost power in the fast lane of the motorway whilst overtaking, so I had to pull over onto hard shoulder and limp off at the next exit.

The AA diagnostic test threw up a fault code of P1251 - Stepper motor for turbocharger control circuit - intermittent fault.

Does anyone know if that's likely to be an expensive fix? The AA guy said he'd never heard of it!

Chances are that you need a new or refurbished turbo. Some have put turbo cleaner in but I'd guess that will only be a temporary fix.

If you go on eBay you will see prices from about £350 to £1200 -and then it needs fitting . Whatever you do get a new oil feed pipe fitted or your new turbo will fail shortly afterwards.

Suggest you try http://www.turbotechnics.com/

Good luck

How fast do you have to go to enter the "fast lane"?

Red, thanks for that. I was probably doing 70 at the most to get around a slow driver in the middle lane...

I will check out the link (with thanks).

I had exactly same issues you describe and same MIL code too. Spoke to local garage that does Terraclean service. Was assured it would free up the sticking variable turbo vanes.

Google it for more info. I had the service a couple of months ago and "touch wood" its been fine ever since. Have the problem with 5th gear now - but thats a different issue altogether.

Cost of the Terraclean service was £108 and they came and did it at home. All I can say is it worked for me.
