Yaris Ts Turbo

Hi all,

This may sound stupid to some of you, but I thought it may be worth a shot.

Basically I've been wanting to fit a turbo to my Yaris TS (02) for a while now but I've been put off by having to change other components of the car to go with the turbo. However, Toyota did sell turbo version TS, just not in the UK. From what I understand, all TS's (turbo and non-turbo) were built in the same place and I was just wondering whether I could get away with fitting an original TS turbo to my UK TS without having to change many other components. This probably sounds really stupid (sorry!!).

Any suggestions welcome!

Not a stupid question but not an easy job either the Turbo Yaris all left the factory as Standard TS but where converted to Turbo by Toyota motorsport ( Same people that built the Compressor Corollas ) Toyota limited the numbers of these to a few hundred cars and kept information secret so as to prevent copies being built. The conversion was not a simple one, requiring a new fuel system incl injectors and a New Engine ECU along with new Pistons, rings, Con rods, Head gasket exhaust, manifolds etc. None of these parts can be bought of the shelf from Toyota and the supply of spare parts is restricted to the genuine cars only.

Way back when Toyota had a technical & training centre up by Heathrow they had a 1.3 & 1.5 Turbo Yaris's up there both LHD which where brought over to the UK to see if we could have RHD versions but it was abandoned as the cost of modifying the cars further to allow a RHD version was going to make the cars way too expensive to retail in the UK so a kit to suit a RHD Yaris was never made available in Europe

Thank you for the quick response! I had a feeling it would be like that, I was just really hoping it wouldn't be the case

Even if a factory kit was available it would still involve a lot of other changes, unless the power increase was fairly small.

Typically as well as the turbo there will be additional/different exhaust piping, inter-cooler and extended intake pipework, larger fuel injectors, possibly a larger fuel pump, remapping of the ECU, possibly cooler spark-plugs. It might need a bigger cat too - depends how much 'spare' there is in the OEM unit.

Obviously your insurance will change too.

With a bit of luck your pistons, con-rods and crank will be strong enough :D

I'm sure there are motorsport companies that could do this for you, but I'd hazard a cost of at least a few grand.

A quick Google suggests there are aftermarket kits, but possibly US ones. However the post I read more fully (about the Zage kit) said "Also – this is an incredibly lengthy and difficult installation. If you’re on the fence about all the work required to pull this off, stop here. You need to WANT this. ...

... I would say it took me approximately 4 six-hour days to finish the install. Troubleshooting and leak diagnosis made it take a couple days longer."

One question - Are you just after more power in the car you have, or are you just hankering for more power/performance in general?

I'd certainly question the logic of spending several £k on a 12-13 year old Yaris, bearing in mind that you probably won't get any of it back in future resale (and it might make it very hard to sell too). So getting a different car might make more sense. (Maybe a non-turbo version of something more readily 'upgraded' at a later date.)

if you making a faster then I would think brakes would be in line for modification also. Seems to me to be a waste of money and time.

why not buy a Yaris with the 1800cc petrol engine? think it gives about 125bhp

I think even a Toyota made engine would perhaps object to being turboed after 12 years abuse.. I doubt if the piston rings could stand the extra pressure...

No no don't worry I won't be modifying my poor little Yaris! It was just a general query as I was talking to my boyfriend about it and we were both unsure. Thank you for the suggestions though I do appreciate them!

We were discussing turbo-charging (not Toyota) on another forum and this comment was made:

Fast, cheap, reliable
Pick 2
I think that tells you everything :)

I don't recall anyone doing such a mod here but IIRC there was someone over at the yarisworld forum who added a small turbo to their TS ages ago. From what I remember it was very light boost so they didn't have to change anything else in the engine, but I assume they ran it on higher octane fuel just in case.

(YarisWorld is a US forum tho', and it seems modding cars is a lot more common place over there!)

If you really want to get a turbo-charged Yaris, you could get a diesel one... :naughty:

(They're a lot of fun :D 'tho the TS has noticeably better handling!)

Hi! I just bought one of these cars, an I am interested in learning as much as I can about them. But I can not find any evidence to confirm this information about the details of the conversion.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thx!
