Have you had the Battery drop tested as it may not have the oomph it used to have if it is the original ?

There is a case here for more info. the Battery would be my first thing to be checked as this would show if there is any failings there and would also show if the alternator was doing it's job. It is akin to changing a light bulb and then finding there is a power cut.

Does the engine turn over at a good rate of knots when you turn the key to start it,If so this should discount the Battery and starter motor. It is more about filling in the whole picture so members who can help can maybe pinpoint your problem

Hi Kevin, did it have 4 glow plugs? In your post you write glow plug singular, sorry to knit pick but I have known people to change one and the other three fail soon after.

Are you waiting for the glow plug light to go out before you crank it?

You can also try doing the glow plugs twice before cranking and see if that helps.

On some diesels the glow plugs operate for about 10 secs after the light goes out so maybe waiting for a few more secs before cranking might help

I live in British Columbia, Canada and as such it has a tendency to get a little chilly and my 91 diesel surf isn't a huge fan of the cold start, but aside from ensuring that all 4 glow plugs are in good order I have installed an engine block heater and a rad heater...but the thing that helps the most is to cycle the glow plugs at least twice before starting...as mentioned above 10 seconds is about average for the plugs to cycle so I usually turn the key till the glow plug light goes out and then turn the key back and do it again before starting.
