according to Castrol oil checker I should be using A1, what is the difference between a1 c2 and c3.

I need educating on the oil side of things so if someone can spare me a bit of knowledge this would be appreciated.

I have just bought c3..can I use or will I have to take it back.

ACEA A1(petrol)/B1(diesel) spec provides good fuel economy when used in either a petrol engine or a diesel engine without a diesel particulate filter.

ACEA C1, C2 & C3 are for diesel engines with a diesel particulate filter and either a 'low ash' or 'mid ash' requirement (known as SAPS - Sulphated Ash, Phosphurous, Sulphur). Not using a low ash oil can result in the dpf becoming blocked. The difference between these 3 grades is the amount of ash they produce, and in the case of C2, its suitability for optimum fuel economy/performance.

Not sure whether C3 is suitable for yours.

A useful brief explanation of the ACEA grades here: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-789-acea.aspx

You can use the C3 oil in your car it will cause no harm but an A1 grade oil is most likely cheaper and perfectly fine for your car.

Castrol magnatec 5w30 A1 fully synthetic is what Id go for.

But since mine has been to the moon and back in mileage I could use 10w40.

C2 would be fine but is overkill as any C# oil would be, as your Avensis does not have a DPF/DPNR.
