2004 Avensis 2.0 D4D Oil Burning Problem.

I hope some of you guys can help because Im quite confused about whats going on with the old boy.

I had the car serviced a few weeks ago at my local garage. I checked the oil level at the time on the dipstick and it was fine. However, I checked the dipstick this morning and there was hardly any oil on it at all so I topped it up.

The car does smoke sometimes on startup only. Its a bluish/greyish kinda colour and smells terrible.

What could be causing the oil to burn? EGR was cleaned a few months ago and there arent any warning lights on the dash either.

Any help/info is appreciated. TIA.

Hi, I am having the same issue with my 06 2.2 D4D. Everything was fine until the last service following which the oil light came on and I found the oil level to be almost off the dipstick. The car had covered about 8000 miles following the service but here's the rub: it has never used or lost oil in between previous services. I'm hoping that it wasn't filled up with cheap/the wrong oil which has triggered the consumption now. I must admit it is a worry. Do you know what oil was put in yours?

Yes it was comma xtech 5w30 fully synthetic.

Im a bit concerned that there arent any warning lights on dash. I was hoping something aa major as this would trigger the warning lights.

And mine was the same as you mention. No oil consumption between services.

In your car you might want to look at the threads about the head gasket issue that can afflict this family of engines. Unfortunately your car would now be out of the goodwill extended warranty that Toyota instituted (7 years/112k) http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_id=10987

My first toyota, the 2004 diesel is a different family though so not prone to this.

I see. Iv taken it to a local diesel specialist who thinks its either the piston rings, valve seals or turbo. But to find out which one he'd have to take the rocker cover off which can take good part of an hour. So Id have to book the car in and pay x amount just for a diagnosis.

With over 210k on the clock I dnt know if its worth getting repaired.

Any thoughts?

At that mileage i would be going with the duff oil scraper rings,or both including the Turbo, it would be cheaper to swap the engine if that were the case? when you say it was OK before the service ?did they use an engine flush before they changed the oil .

Also I would be inclined to use 10w 40 semi synthetic with that sort of mileage which would increase the compression a tad which can sometimes help in your engines situation.

I think Ill start topping up with 10w40 semi from now on. Yes, they did use an engine flush. Is that a problem?

Right, well what the engine flush does is loosen up the crud which has been built up over a couple of hundred thousand miles over a long period resulting in the engine being too clean,in actual fact if engine flush has not been used since the first service then i would not use it at all ...drop the 5w 30 and put some 10w 40 semi in her and see how you go then before resorting to head off situation.

Checked mine today and it hasn't used any oil since I topped it up with Magnatec. I'm guessing the local mechanic may have filled it up with cooking oil rather than engine oil. As for head gasket concerns, I have been monitoring it for years since becoming aware of the issue and there are no sypmtoms of head gasket failure. Yet.

Doing a 450 mile motorway run on Monday, will check it after that.

I was at the garage when he serviced it. He did definitely use the oil I bought which was comma xtech 5w30 fully synthetic. Iv topped it up and all it took was half a litre. But I will be keeping an eye on it from now on.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi. I had same prob on my car, it's say in handbook use only 5/30 semi oil. After some research I found Archoil AR9100 Advanced Friction Modifier & Oil Additive (250ml). I've used it every oil change since then. The car has stopped using oil ,no top ups between services .never use full synthetic oil in an old engine.the car has done 180,000 k now.post-131343-14214882806_thumb.jpg

Hi

You said there were no warning lights for low oil? This is what I'm suspecting occurred with the destruction of my engine. The Toyota garage two weeks proir to its demise didn't detect it either, said there was no problem with the slight noise in my car. See my positing under Pinot Noir, my D4D 2.2 was in mint condition, never a problem. Then bam, total engine died as I was parking. Initially, the garage said it was the injectors, which didn't seem plausible because the car never vibrated, ran hot or idled beyond 1000rpm. I will see the full report on monday. One person here said lack of oil could have played a part to cause the injectors to go. Oh, finally the oil light did come on, along with that of the engine and repair wrench, thirty seconds before the life of the engine was over.

So it seems the warning lights on the dash aren't always on when they should be.

Ok they came on in the end but thirty seconds before the end of the engine? Not good.

Let us know what it says in the report about your engine failure.
