Avensis Crash Safety

Hi

My old Avensis 1.8 2003/T2 and only 75K miles is going fine but thinking of getting a slightly newer one, perhaps 07 with low miles on it assuming I can find one of these! Just a thought about safety issues-does the later Avensis 07 say have more airbags than the older Avensis and does it have any additional safety related features compared to the older models?

Is your current Avensis a T22 made between 1998 and 2003, or the T25 made from 2003 to 2009?

if its the GLS stated it will be T22.

In 2003, the Avensis became the first Japanese vehicle to receive a 11px-Star_full.svg.png11px-Star_full.svg.png11px-Star_full.svg.png11px-Star_full.svg.png11px-Star_full.svg.png rating under the Euro NCAP's redone testing, with 34 total points it also became the highest rated vehicle they had tested.[4] The 2003 Avensis also became the first vehicle sold in Europe with a knee airbag.[5]

The Avensis kept its passengers safe. Its body remained stable and gave maximum protection in the side impact. Meanwhile, it lost only two points in the frontal impact. The frontal airbag system tailored itself to the driver. The Avensis also has sensors at its front corners. A knee airbag deploys for crashes above 25kph and was effective. An intelligent belt reminder system is fitted for the driver and front passenger. The restraint chosen for the three-year-old uses ISOFIX mountings and a top tether but testers noted weaknesses in the protection that it gave. Pedestrians are poorly protected with no special effort made to reduce knee and leg injuries.

Front impact
The frontal airbags inflate in two stages to increase pressure in severe accidents. The drivers airbag deploys according to weight, increasing force for heavier people. Chest, head and neck protection for those in the front was good. There has been much effort to protect the drivers knees and legs and a knee airbag worked well. The drivers footwell is padded around his feet and it suffered little impact intrusion. The centre rear seat has a three-point belt, which is much safer than a lap-only belt.

Side impact
An impressive side-impact protection system includes a thorax side airbag and a head curtain for those in the front and rear. The Avensis gained full marks in this part of the tests.

Child-protection
Permanent labels that warn of the dangers of fitting a rear-facing child seat opposite an airbag are good. All three rear belts could be locked to improve their hold on restraints. The three-year-olds seat faced forward and used ISOFIX mountings and a top tether; it protected his head in the forward impact but not in the side impact. The child also risked chest injury in the frontal impact. The younger child faced rearwards. His head was well protected but he risked chest and neck injury.

Pedestrian protection
The bumper and bonnet leading edge gave no protection. However, the lower central bonnet showed some softness, helping to protect where childrens heads might hit.

2009;

Adult occupant
The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal test. Dummy readings showed good protection of the knees and femurs of both driver and passenger. Toyota showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes or those sat in different positions. The Avensis scored maximum points for all body regions in the side barrier test. In the side pole impact, the dummy was loaded in a way which is unrepresentative of a human and the car was penalised. Combined with the rib deflections measured in the test, protection of the chest in this test was rated as weak. However, protection against whiplash injuries was good.

Child occupant
Based only on the dummy responses in the tests, the car scored maximum points for protection of the 3 year infant. For the 1½ year old, Euro NCAP awards fewer points for a forward facing restraint than for a rearward facing one but the dummy readings were all good. The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. Clear information is provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag, essential to the safety of a child or adult occupant. Moreover, a clear warning is given of the dangers of using a rearward facing child restraint in that seating position without first disabling the airbag.

Pedestrian
The bumper provided good protection to pedestrians' legs. In most areas likely to be hit by the head of a struck child, the bonnet was also rated as good. However, the bonnet provided predominantly poor protection to the head of a struck adult.

Safety assist
Electronic Stability Control is at least an option on all variants throughout Europe and is expected to be standard equipment in the great majority of car sales.
A seatbelt reminder system covering front and rear seats is standard equipment

Go for the t 25 face lift as they most probably have the traction control option fitted.
