Hi how many miles does it take to warm up, diesels do take longer, but if its more than 7 miles I suggest you look for a airlock if no success I would change the thermostat.

I have the same car as yours. An Avensis D4D T3s. Mine takes ages to warm up............. anything between 6 - 10 miles before it gets up to normal running temp......... when temp gauge gets to middle of gauge, needle pointing to 3-o-clock. Until the engine gets warm, I have a very cold journey.

Enquiries on this forum seem to indicate it's a common problem. I've had the thermostat replaced today with a genuine Toyota part & I'll let you know if it makes any difference but I'm not optimistic.

That pre-heater switch....... according to someone on this forum who sounds like they know their stuff......... does nothing at all. Seems Toyota screwed up & forgot to remove the switch from British cars, but on cars that go to harsher climates it operates an Eberspacher type deisel-fired auxiliary heater for warming the car interior on cold mornings.

Hi!

I have a 53 plate Avensis D-4D Tspirit with the same problem. It takes ages to get warm in the car. But after some time I observed that the passenger side in fact is very warm, and quite fast. The only problem is the the driver side (right side), gets warm very hard, or maybe not at all. Sometimes I can hear the water running in the heater in the dashboard, especially when is cold outside, I just start the engine, or it's still warming up and I rev it suddenly.

I've read on the forum that it is possible that there are air bubbles in the heater, and you have to take them out by squeezing the hot hose that goes inside from the engine bay. But it's very hard to do this (the hose is extremely stiff), and I couldn't manage it. I have got to the service, changed the fluid, but they told me the air bubbles should get out on their own.

After several weeks of thinking I got the idea: I got into a very steep ramp and rev the engine. And here it was, I've heard bubbles going in the heater and somehow managed to get hot air to driver side also.

I drove like this for several days, but one day I've tried the auxiliary heating. Again. Basically, since that day practically I reverted back the problem, and start to get cold again on the driver side.

So, I am quite sure that the lack of inside heating in the D-4D engine is coming from the air bubbles that get caught into the heater, and very probable the responsible for them is the auxiliary heater (or some sort of problem along the circuit if the auxiliary heating is missing). Is there anyone out here that could help us get the air bubbles out, and also the auxiliary heating to work? The idea that the english cars have the button only as a dummy, I quite don't believe it. Toyota never does things just to be done.

Does anyone have any idea exactly how the auxiliary heating work?

Mr. T has no idea how to help in this matter.

Thank you!

I had this bubbles noise occasionaly from the matrix

id top up with 1 litre water and it would be good for a month then happen again.

changed my radiator due to it showing signs of evaporated antifreeze round the header tanks

also had to clean up radiator hose connections.

I figured this was the very small steam/water leak that was not noticable

took a bit of bleeding after radiator change

but been alright since

mine must be from matrix too as when I go outside I cannot hear it, mine does not loose any water so must be a airlock.

Hi,

Firstly check your coolant level. If it's low this would cause your issue. Monitor the coolant level or even flush the system if required.

I also have the water running noise in dashboard, but I seem to be losing coolant that comes out of the overflow on the expansion tank. Would an air lock cause this? Car is a 56 plate T180. Car runs really well, has never overheated and doesn't use oil other than top up at annual service. I only do 6 or 7000 miles per year.
