View This Video Of My Engine Idling

Hi All,

Sorry for all the topics, im trying to locate any faults with my new car.

I got a video of my engine idling earlier and i dont think it sounds right. When i test drove it at the dealer, the car was fine and idled like a dream. The second hand car dealer put a load of unlabelled oil in to "top it up". The engine oil was on the edge of the minimum mark when i checked so i asked him to fill it up. After a few trips to work and back i noticed the idle was a bit shaky and wobbled as if about to stall. Here is what it sounds like. There is no fault lights on the dash of anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds not too disimilar to mine, subject to my post this afternoon about under the bonnet sounding like a bag of nails. Been topping my engine up with 5w-30

Sounds like a deisel right? Crappy idle under 1k and makes a noise upto 2k. Pretty sure its the timing chain tensioner or possibly broken chain guide, could even be the oil that has been put in by the dealer. Cant be sure so posted a video to get a better opinion before the garage take a look tomorrow. Dont want to get mis-diagnosed and cost me more than the cars worth.

Mine is a diesel Jake, so I can expect some noise, but it is noise above "normal" diesel engined noise.

Silly me haha. Im going to get a service as its due and see if an oil change fixes the problem. Should have asked what oil he was putting in.

sounds like maybe misfire to me. Could be spark plugs which will be changed at service but maybe ignition coils which are cheap too. Engine management will come on soon if it is misfire though. Also I dont think it has anything to do with oil just saying.

You were right, engine management has just come on. Amber light, not flashing. Could a broken tensioner give me an engine light or would you say its a misfire? Last service was 17,000 miles ago, been serviced at every interval recommended in the owners manual. Last service was 122,000 and im now on 139,000.

If you have done 17000 miles since its last service then it is not unlikely that you will now be paying the price for neglecting serviceing...........Even TOYOTAS need servicing!

That is a worn timing chain. Period. Or a worn chain tensioner.

You can alleviate the noise by an oil and filter change. Use a 10-40W oil and genuine Toyota oil filter. The heavier oil will mask some of the wear.

Lack of oil changes ruin timing chains.

A replacement tensioner is about £35. A replacement chain is about £170. Replacemnet guides about £10. Labour will be £300 or more: wheel off, disconnect engine mount - long job.

Uneconomic on an old car.

(Been there , DIY'd it, would not DIY again as pia and I'm too old now for grovelling)

I didn't neglect servicing, i just purchased the car from a dealer... Only passed my test a month ago. Time to take the car back then, this will be the second car from the same dealer with major issues. This time i wont settle for a replacement, i will get a full refund and take my money somewhere else. Thanks for the help.

You can get the full timing chain kit including sprockets for £65 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Yaris-1-0-16v-Timing-Chain-Kit-inc-Gears-Sprockets-1999-2005-1SZ-FE-/111398297235?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AToyota|Model%3AYaris%2FVitz&hash=item19efdb1e93

Give the car back, I'm sorry to say but you brought junk. The mileage is 160k-170k and that is the time when the cars on its last legs. I suggest you put in some more money into purchasing a Yaris under 90k miles if you would like a good solid Yaris. As you can see the Yaris you currently have has made it to 160k miles and still running. Even though it is not smooth etc but it still made it, other cars will not get past 120k, especially a 1.0 or 1.3 engine you have, look at other 1.0 cars all finished by 90k max. Buy a good mileage car and then expect it to run forever :P

Cheers mate, im a bit worried taking this one back now as this will be the second car they have given me that has a serious fault. I paid £650 for it and the last car they give me was a rover 45 and the head gasket had gone on it and the brake servo. Im peed off now as i just want a reliable car that will last me 12 months so i can save for something better. I dont really want to go down the finance route on a new car. Thanks for all the input folks.

The car has 139,000 miles on the clock. Still alot of mileage and im seeing cars for around the same price with alot less. The dealer wasnt happy that i brought the rover back and kept asking me if i was happy with the yaris and i said yes with what i can see anyway. I cant strip it down to check everything there and then. I did take it to my local garage and they said to keep an eye on it, if it gets worse to bring it back. I dont really want to leave it too long as the dealer could turn around and say i caused the problem.

Here is the advert the dealer had up. Says ideal first car... Yeah right!

The chain I bought for son's yaris 1.0 (2001) bears no relation to that ad.. Son's one had 8-10 links in parallel and was mounted on a multi size sprocket.. see

Ideal first car...

Ah, well, us wizened old gits would read that as "No-one who's owned a car before would touch this with a bargepole"

I'm only kidding. Well, half-kidding :) . You do need to ignore any subjective cr@p like that in any advert. The facts are what's important - mileage, age, spec, condition, price and possibly any extras/mods IF they are important to YOU (otherwise ignore them).
