On the 2.0Ltr D4D 2002 they are under the engine cover. To remove the cover unscrew the 5 retaining dome headed retaining screws and take off cover,to expose the cylinder head and the four in line glowplugs. Remove the electrical feeed cables ensuring to retain any washers. Caution will be needed to remove the glow plugs as they can sheer at the cylinder head level, as did one of mine, otherwise it's just a matter of unscrewing like a spark plug. The plugs can be tested but you will need to reder to a specification for the correct resistance reading

thanks for the reply. I shall have a look and see what I can find although mine is an 08 plate but I guess they should be in a similar place

Glow plugs on your 1AD 2.0 diesel are on the front of the cylinder head above the intake manifold between the EGR valve and the head itself, they are a monitored item so if you have a failed plug your will have an Engine warning lamp on and a flashing glowplug light, if not then it is unlikely you have a glow plug issue, if you are having a cold start issue of prolonged cranking and possible stalling before the car eventually fires and runs normally which is only when cold and not hot, see http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/165396-poor-starting/
