the power heater isn't even an option in the UK.

Your button isn't the mirror fold is it (a photo would help)?

Im assuming you mean the button with the orange light?

It isnt on my car, and and said above I dont think its an option in the UK.

Where are you from?

we have MAN trucks at work with a very similar looking switch. It is used to preheat hydraulic oil to stop it freezing up and breaking pipes (our trucks are military so designed for all sorts)

That is the button for the power heater. To get it to "work" the temperature control must be set to "High" and fan on any level.

It takes about 70 seconds to start working.

There is another button for the heated windscreen\mirrors. Also mirror heating is activated when using the rear window heating button.

The heater wasn't an option on our cars at that time bud, puzzling why the actual switch was added though ,i see that Magnus in non UK based forgive me for being presumptuous but that sounds like a Scandinavian name ie Iceland which partly would explain why he has the heater...lol.

Aha, yes Norway. What i have read is that the preheater is standard in all D4-D (the manual for scandinavian model :p). Maybe they just remove the heater in warmer climates and leave the button there. Strange that the button light is working, but not connected to a circuit.

Read your manual. In the pre-facelift T25 there is an actual heater with fuel line and exhaust and something with the A/C unit. If you do not have a fuel base heater than you have the one with the A/C unit. It states that you have to have your temp set to "HI", air incoming air "Fresh" and depending on the outside temp putting the A/C on or not on. I'm telling you this by memory so I'm not 100% sure about the actual settings of the incoming air setting and the A/C setting. But I'm sure about the "Hi" setting on the temp. I can look in my manual tomorrow if I use the car and will get to you again.

This is a cut version of a russian owner manual. It is for the pre-facelift T25 Avensis. See that there are two types of heater. f you do not have a fuel type heater, than you must have a hot gas heater. In that case then you have to consider the table that states when the system will be operational. Engine should be running.

Outside temp (celsius): With A/C switched off from 8 to -30, with A/C on from 0 to -30. Cooling temp below 70. Then you have to consider the other options: Incoming air - Fresh (recirculation - OFF), Fan speed- Any except OFF, Temp - HI.

Also if you can here some noises from the front, this means that the gas pressure is dropping and you should not worry as this is normal.

If those conditions are not met then the system will shutdown automatically, but the button light will remain on. This is because the button is not an "electronical" one as the A/C button for example. It's a push in and push out, so you should be aware of its state. because of it's location it is hard to see if it's on, without it's light on.

So this is it, do no be confused that this is not working, as it should. Test it and you should see an improvement from your heater.

It is not an electric heater. This is a hot gas heater. I believe it is implemented by the air conditioning system. The other thing is if you have a diesel heater. If you have it it should have a separate exhaust system and if you luck under the front of the car you should see it.
