Pressing The Accelerator Pedal

It's recently occurred to me that when needing to pick up speed, e.g. moving away from a roundabout on a dual carriageway, I've had the habit of pressing the accelerator with the front part of my foot whilst my heel pretty much rests on the carpet, but that I can alternatively lift my heel up and apply more of a full press to the pedal. I haven't tried this too much yet but it does seem to deliver a bit more power although I'm wondering whether it might reduce my Aygo's mpg if I accelerate too rapidly when I don't need to.

How do you press the accelerator when needing to pick up speed?

Keeping one's heel on the driver's mat allows one to quickly change from using the accelerator to using the brake by using one's heel as a swivel point. Removing one's heel from the driver's mat will make it more difficult to change between the brake and accelerator pedals quickly.

I would imagine the practice you're suggesting could be dangerous in some situations - possible operation of the accelerator in error.

When the NHSTA in the US were investigating cases of unintended acceleration in 2009/10, in a high proportion of cases the wrong pedal (the accelerator) was used instead of the brake, and the majority of cases were put down as driver error.
