Noisy Automatic Gearbox According To Parkers?

Thinking of buying an 07 1.8 auto T3 X but on looking at the Parker Guide and their review of this car they say the CVT automatic gearbox is noisy and jerky and "spoils the serenenity of the Avensis drive" and is best avoided?

I have an 03 1.8 and the gearbox is beautifully smooth and quiet - did Toyota really take a backward step with the newer auto models and is this a known problem with these auto models. I was pretty certain to get another Avensis buit this has made me less certain-any experiences to share on this?

thanks

I have no idea which gearbox is in the model you are looking at but if it is the same CVT box as in the T27 from 2009 onwards then it is certainly not noisy or jerky in any way. The best bet is to test drive the car and see what it's like. I have yet to find a report stating there are faults with any Toyota CVT box. The CVT box is different to drive compared to a conventional auto box and you may notice the engine revs higher under initial hard acceleration but after a while you will become used to it and adapt your driving style accordingly.

If they're driven quite aggressively with the accelerator, CVTs tend to be very noisy as they will run at high RPMs a lot.

If driven more progressively and gently then they shouldn't be any noisier than any other autobox.

I had a 55 plate 1.8 T3S auto and it drove like a regular torque converter auto, not noisy or jerky in the slightest.
