Gear Change On Rav4

Happy New Year to all.

1998 RAV. 2.0L. 3 door. Manual. 111000 miles.

I have been told that earlier Ravs suffer with difficulty in engaging first gear, is this correct?

It is sometimes nigh impossible to engage first gear on my Rav unless I first go into second gear and then it doesn"t always work and I sometimes have to start off in second gear.

Could it be worn Gear change Cables? and if so is it a job that an average DIY bloke like me could carry out? and if so are there any special tools required? If not, roughly how long would a garage take to carry out the work?

When the RAV was serviced in December 2014 I asked the mechanic to check the gearbox oil and he confirmed it was OK.

Hello,

I purchased a 1999 black Rav 4 with 80,000 miles and have exactly the same issue with 1st and 2nd gear.

When I got the car I had a full service done and they mentioned the clutch but said it was not a serious issue or on its way out.

Had the car for 6 months now and the clutch has got a bit better and to be honest I hardly notice the stick.
