Timing Belt Broken

Hello All,

I have a 2003 Rav 4 2.0 d4d with a broken timing belt due to a tensioner failure.

My question is, is there enough clearance between valve and cylinder to prevent contact, or is it a case of head off to see a bent/broken valve?

Hope you can help

Mike

sorry to hear this, which tensioner failed the piston type(hydraulic) and what was the mileage?

The belt was changed along with the tensioner about 50000 miles ago.

It was an aftermarket kit that was used.

The milage on the Rav is about 140000.

We pulled the head off and found bent valves, so head is going off to be repaired.

I have an option of a replacement secondhad for €750, but we are inclined to stay with the current, as it did not burn oil.

I wouldn't mind but i had warned the person to always to buy a genuine tensioner.

The other idler pulleys are fine.

The owner had the belt done elsewhere, and have now come to my father in law and i to help them out.

Toyota quoted €470 for the belt kit including idler pulleys and waterpump

I was wondering, i have been looking up payen head gaskets for the engine, and it shows varying thicknesses, i'm assuming the 1mm will do if we don't get it skimed. Any thoughts anyone
