Size Of Spare Tyre

Hi, I am changing my 2009 Avensis for a 2014 model. When I bought the existing car, I didn't like the space saver spare so I bought a standard steel wheel and tyre to match the T2 which has steel 16 inch wheels. The newer one is an Icon with 17 inch alloys. I am trading in the older car with its original space saver, and am keeping the unused full size spare (the dealer wasn't interested in taking it off me).

So the question is, can I use the unused steel wheel and tyre (205/60 R16 92V) as a spare on the new car? I appreciate the wheels are different sizes but the overall diameter should be about the same as Toyota wont have wanted different sizes with an impact on speedo and mileage readings. The spare measures 65 cm overall but I dont know the size of the new ones as I haven't got it yet.

Thak you, Gavin

According to a Toyota spreadsheet, an Avensis with 17 inch wheels takes 215/55/R17 tyres - but check the actual car as the Toyota website states 265/65/R17 for the Avensis Icon.

that is obviously an error , the new one will be 225/50 r17 so difference in rolling radius is 0.76%.

(sneaky edit by Frosty there - originally it said 265/65 r17 which to be fair does appear on Toyota.co.uk at one point)

different trims/weights/power & then when they facelifted it they changed them slightly - possibly because the tyre industry moves on too & that may have become a better/cheaper/more popular size.

Same happened with the T25.

Thank you for these replies. They establish that there is a degree of difference between the diameter of the steel wheel plus tyre, and the alloy plus tyre. But is that difference big enough to mean I shouldn't use it as a spare? I am not keen on relying on the space saver, especially on motorways where it is limited to 50mph.

if it's a T145/70 d17 spacesaver then the difference in rolling radius between that & a 225/50 R17 is 3.46% or a larger difference in rolling radius than between a 225/50 R17 & a 205/60 R16.

Should you have to use the R16 as a spare then of course it should only be used until the original or replacement tyre is OK for use & then should go back in the boot.

There was no edit - the website spec for the Icon does say 265/65/R17.

The Toyota spreadsheet gives the following tyre sizes for the post 2011 Avensis - 205/60/R16, 215/55/R17 and 225/45/R18

I'm sorry but there was an edit - originally you only gave the 265/65 R17 info. Later you added the bit about the spreadsheet. either that or a forum glitch of some kind.

I think that you will find that your spreadsheet is dated as some later T27 Avensis certainly run 225/50 R17.

No matter. Its a live protected spreadsheet that Toyota update as and when - for example it includes the new Aygo, etc.
