do i have to use expensive platinum plugs in my carina e,if not what are the alternatives?

Answer is NO! You can use any compatible plug ( Your accessory shop should be able to advise ), but platinum tipped will give you 60,000 miles of use. Conventional will possibly only give you between 10-15000 miles of use.

If you work it out, set of platinum tipped will cost around £20 ( change once every 60000) against £8 for normal ( change 4 times up to 60000). Therefore, fitting platinum tipped are the most cost effective & reliable! £20 v £32, no brainer really.

Look at the long term saving, not short term!
