D4D Intermittent Clutch Slip.

Hi everyone, I've had a search through the forums trying to see if anyone had the issue Im having but I haven't seen it so here goes, I'll try to be in depth.

I have a 2002 D4D with 130k on the clock. Recently serviced by MR.T 10k or so ago.

Now, my issue is that the clutch often slips in fifth gear, I can be driving along at 2k revs, put the foot down, still in 5th, and the clutch slips quite badly, but I can drop it into 4th and it won't slip at all.

But it's not always like that, sometimes it won't slip in 5th no matter how much I try to make it slip.

It has been like that for say, the last 2-3k miles (I've been doing a lot of motorway driving the past month)

But in the last week or so, it's been slipping in 3rd and 4th occasionally.

It's completely random when it happens as it can happen when cold or hot.

There is also the lack of power between 3k and 4k revs sometimes but I'll save that for a different thread I think.

Anyway, I hope you guys can shed some light on this for me.

Thanks!

Jamie

Thanks for the reply but I think you read my post wrong, that thread relates to gear popping out.

Whereas my clutch slips in 5th, and occasionally other gears, no popping out.

I'll give you it in 1

dmf failure

you need a new dual mass flywheel and clutch plate

mine was the same, well known problem on d4d's,

depending on your point of view , and google it, you can swap the dmf for a solid flywheel , blueprint one is probably best

here's the hard bit, expect to pay 1200 quid for the job to be done , that includes the parts

if you search this site, theres loads on dmf and solid conversions

good luck

and if you go to a stealer for a dmf+ clutch you wont get much change from 2k !!

had d4d 4.2.5 converted to smf recently, done by a local indy near me. full cost £650 inc vat.

no probs so far,all is well. i used the valeo full smf kit from ECP.

never had the clutch slip on mine, just lots of noises. but they are all different. good luck

The symptoms you describe could be caused by a small amount of oil on the clutch plates which sometimes gets burnt off making the clutch work normally. Do you get a smell when it is slipping ?

I haven't had the clutch burning smell while it's been slipping. Sounds like you guys have confirmed my worst fears. Thanks for all your input

hi

exactly the same here, tried to think of everything , just didn't appear like classic clutch slip , had to really listen hard for the increase in revs, in fact i took mine to france as i wasn't convinced a 32k mile car could have a knackered clutch and flywheel

how wrong i was
