Hi im new to this great looking forum so firstly hi all

I would like to pick your brains i have an 04 T4 (55,300 m)and i started to get a noise which i first thought was the brake pads to disc because it sound like metal on metal

but i noticed the same noise when i was stopped so cant be the brakes :blushing:

the strange this was when i put my foot on the brake and put it into drive i got the same noise ? i have trawled the web but cant find anything that sounds

remotely like the problem im have got.So thinking that the wealth of knowledge that would be on your forum i might get a rough idea as to how painful this could get

pocket wise.I have booked it in to my local Toyota garage for a diagnostic evaluation next week but would be great to have a little heads up first.

so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance all

So, the metal on metal noise....Is this when you set off moving ??....or from the engine when its running when stationary ??

If it`s a noise as you`re setting off, It way well be coming from the brakes....behind each disc is a plate that keeps dirt etc from the inside face of the disc, this runs very close to the disc, you may be able to get your hand through the wheel and push the plate away from the disc a little in several places to in give a little clearance....if you have steel wheels you`ll probably have to remove them first.

Never heard metal on metal on a Prius that wasn't the brakes.

I guess it depends on your description. It 'could' be the water pump as they had a tendancy to fail on earlier gen2's, though I'm sure there was a recall for this. At least check your coolant levels to make sure you've not got a leak.

I'm trusting you've got oil in the engine? That would make the noise - just hope it's not this.

Have you changed the transmission fluid? If so I really hope you used the correct (and hard to source ) oil as it has to be a special none conductive type due to the hundreds of volts running through the motors. Use normal transmission fluid and you'll have ruined your car.

Maybe a catalytic converter heat shield? Sometimes they come loose and rattle against the exhaust.

Finally and a long shot because of your mileage (assuming it's genuine). It could be one of the electric motors arcing due to the insulation on the copper wire in the motors breaking down. Usually this happens in the hundreds of thousands of miles in hard used examples.

What's the history of the car? Have you owned it for years or was it an eBay 'bargain'?

Hi thanks for the replys i don't have to be moving just touch down the gear lever and you hear it,had about 6 months and one owner and got full Toyota service history and the mots with the mileage on so hope its correct.I thought possible transmission fluid but i can only wait for the report next week to sus that out i hope.

The transmission (or correctly transaxle) fluid is for the life of the car. It doesn't need changing according to Toyota UK, hence the special fluid being hard to get hold of.

However, many US owners have changed theirs and it can be black and burnt after only 70k miles. Many recommend changing it at 50k intervals. I just wonder if the previous owner had done it, though if it had a full Toyota history then it's doubtful.

It's not the a/c bearing or a/c clutch is it? I know the gen3 is fully electric and that buzzes if low on gas, but not sure about the gen2. Try turning the a/c off and see if the problem remains. The water pump is still a consideration as is a loose heat shield. If you're really unlucky it could be a shattered cat. If it is that, and it's unlikely, then it's a large bill. I know the gen3 is about a grand.

Just a quick update the Toyota Garage said they found a leaking water pump, fuel filler flap loose and a noise that sounds like it was coming from the brakes but can be heard when going from park to drive but they don't know where it originates from, so was that £80 well spent Im not really sure :disgust:

so now i have found a friend of a friend that will track it down for me and see what path that leads me to :driving:

So it was the water pump then?

If it's leaking you really want to get it sorted! On a long shot I wonder if it's the inverter coolant pump? Are they electric like on the gen3?

Strange the water pump is leaking when they were recalled only 2 years ago and you say you have no outstanding recalls?

Be curious which Toyota dealer you went to and see if others on here think of them? Good luck to your friend working it out, the Prius has a dual regen and friction braking system which needs calibration. I'm still thinking the water pump could be an issue, especially if it's leaking. They're known to fail - as per the above link.

You might have to post a clip of the noise so we can all better guess.

Nothing reported on the US forums about this part. I guess they can fail and your car is now over 10 years old so will start getting age related faults. Let's just hope it is that part and not the dealers throwing expensive parts at the car in the hope they fix it.

I trust your 12v is strong and fairly new?
