Gen7 140 Potential Buyer - Clutch Life And Signs Of Faults

Evening all

Im looking at buying a 140 gen7 Celica, from the write ups on here and generally, the post 2002 facelift 140 Celica is a pretty solid car.

The one area that has always been a concern for me with cars is the clutch.

What sort of milage do clutches survive in a 140 Celica?

Ive only ever had clutch cable cars, not hydraulic units - is there a way to test the clutch's life and health other than checking for slip by booting it in a low'ish gear? Anything specific to a Celica that is a dead giveaway for a tired clutch.

I drove a fairly tired example a few days ago, actually selecting and engaging 1st was really really tough, the car had to be pretty much stationary. (Im coming from a Peugeot 205 gti, where first is just another car and could be selected really freely, are celica's any different?)

basically any information on the clutch, its life and replacement would be hugely appreciated!

Cheers

John

Hi one way to check clutch is to put car in gear 3, put up handbrake and try accelerating. Car should stall instantly, if the car moves then it means that clutch is slipping (you will also get a burning smell as a result).

No particular issues/scares with the Celica clutch...clutch wear is usually down to the pilot.!

I'm on 86k with original clutch and no issues....replacement would cost around £350/400..about 4-5 hours workshop time.
