This is the petrol engine , mine having covered 145k miles. Starting to use quite a lot of oil now. Approx half a dipstick to 150 miles. Would like to swap engine for a newer used one. Does anybody know if the new shape avensis engine will fit or has anybody already done a similar replacement?. Thank you for your replies

The engines are mostly the same. Last year a member installed a Celica engine complete with 6 speed gearbox, into a mk1 Avensis with vvti oil burning problems. The only issue he had was the gear linkage, and he thought out of the box and solved that. He sold the car soon after.

The later 1ZZ engine from 2006-on should fit your car, no problems.
