Dashcam

Hi all, Just got a dash cam front and rear and it has the ability to detect a knock in a car park and save.

The company who fits them says they will only wire to ignition?

Is there a reason for this? The car starts about 30 times a day so the sat Nav, cab radio and Dashcam will all be firing up each time I push the start button

(from !Removed! lighter power)?

Also, does anyone know the purpose of the different batteries? Does the one in the boot power the lights etc and the hybrid batteries the engine?

Is there a particulat drain on either if running a lot of stuff?

Andy

Is it a petrol, diesel or hybrid Auris?

Fag lighter power is exactly the same as what your Battery ( for engine start) pumps out

ok thanks, I wonder if the car Battery is kept in optimum charge before the hybrid ones take a charge...?

Does anyone know how things are re-charged on these cars???

The idea is that the Dashcam starts up automatically every time the engine is started. The Parking Protection type run all the time in a low res low energy mode and kick into full power on impact or motion detection or when the car is started.

Yes thats the idea if it is wired directly with a power cut out if Battery gets low but they wouldn`t use that, only wire to ignition?

I was just wondering why as now, although it does go into auto parking mode when it detects the car is not moving, the whole thing goes off when stop button pushed to turn car off.

I have been using a internal rear view camera the one that mounts on the internal rear view mirror. Cheap but it does the job. Full hd cam, g sensor, good night vision, loop recording option of 1,3,5 mins, takes photo as well and support up t o 32 gb of sd card. Wide angle.cam.as well

What Dashcam do you have 'cause I maybe able to help you out with it?

I was considering mounting them to the headrest so they are out the way and no messing about with trim and just set it up to be to the lighter socket

Yes they are worth getting and through police witness. com other advantages and cheaper insurance, got all of the above and 64gb micro sd and app on phone to view what cams are seeing and save files.

Hi,

Just to let you know that a number of insurance schemes offer discounts for a wide range of in in-car cameras.

Regards,

Dan.

Surely Dan it should be any Dashcam gets a discount as they all do the same job with varying quality of course but it it's clear enough then that should be enough surely. cos that could mean having to spend a couple of hundred quid to get a " recommended " one rather than just a Dashcam and would that mean I would need front and rear and mounted in specific places etc ... It's like a tracker is that really worth anything these days I know they used to ... Sorry bit of a rant there but it just seems a bit daft for it to be on a range of in car dash cams rather than just all of them

Sorry Darksta, missed the post, I have the blackvue 560 2ch.

To above post, I think it is down to the quality and if it is useable in court as some are just not good enough. Same goes with cctv at home.

I appreciate it's need to be of decent quality but the two that I fitted to a friend's Saab 9-3 are pretty good just as good as the Blackvue that's fitted in his vw transporter camper and cost about 50 -60 quid for the pair

if they are good enough then thats a good saving. I wish the blackvue showed the times in the file name to make it easier to save and I wish there was a function to lock a file as you are driving......

I've been looking at DOD LS460W and iTracker mini 0806. Seems like they both are top quality cams with display.

I have the 750 2CH and mine stays on all the time and enters parking mode after 5 minutes of the vehicle being stationary. Maybe because it is wired directly into the fuse box using Power Magic Pro and piggy back fuses rather than hardwired to the ignition system like yours.

Night time footage on the 750 is crap compared to the mini 0805. The mini 0806 is still buggy with it's firmware and QC on them isn't so great as the cables get snagged in the case causing them to snap or lose solder joints.

There is a mini 0806 pro in the making so let's see how that goes.

Could you tell more about wiring the camera Darksta? I am not really sure how to do it. Do I need some constant positive or something like cigarette lighter which is on only when the engine is running?

Also is there difference between G sensor and motion detection function (can they be switched ON or OFF separately) and will the motion detection drain the Battery if the car is parked for a whole day in the city center with lots of people walking by?

For most cameras which plug into the 12v accessory one of these (or similar) is recommended to be wired into the car if "parking mode" is required. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Power-BlackVue-Vehicle-Recording-System/dp/B00851F5R4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425138804&sr=8-1&keywords=power+magic+pro

There are three connections to make. An earth, a switched 12v and a permanent 12v. These can be taken from a fuse box using "piggy back" fused connectors. Use non essential or safety related fuses. My switched power uses the accessory socket fuse and permanent feed is from door locking system fuse. I can still gain access to the driver's door using the key if the fuse blows. Although Blackvue the device will work with any camera which uses a plug using the 12v accessory socket.

There is a switch on the device and an indication l.e.d. to use if parking mode is needed. A cut off voltage is user selectable to prevent too much car Battery drain. The length of time for the permanent feed is selectable as well.

The G sensor detects any shocks e,g, being hit by another vehicle, sideways or front to back and it's sensitivity is adjustable. I leave mine at the factory default. It does get triggered on bumpy roads too.

The motion detection obviously detects motion when parked. I set mine to minimum to avoid everything, like passers by at a distance, being detected and switching the camera on all the time. The camera only powers on if motion is sensed.

There are videos on Youtube which show how to wire in. Some use a method of wrapping a wire around the fuse blade and inserting the fuse like that. I wouldn't personally, the "add a circuit" fused method has to be much safer.

I don't know why some of the text has become part of the link?!

Wiring is straight forward as you need two positive and one negative for the Blackvue Dashcam. The mini 0805 is one positive and one negative. I've just received and installed my Cellink b UPS and that is suppose to give me 72 hrs of recorded time so let's see how that goes.

Regarding with recording time on hardwired setups. Mine lasted over 8 hrs of recording in a busy petrol station as that is where I work with just the Blackvue 750 and Power Magic Pro with the setting set to cutoff at 12v. Never once came back to a dead car like that and the 750 was still recording.

Installation wise is very easy. You'll either a voltmeter or mechanic circuit tester, two micro piggy back fuse, crimp tool and some micro fuses for the correct Dashcam amperage. Blackvue is 2amps.

Check fuse with voltmeter/circuit tester for one hot positive (always on) and one on start positive (when the engine is started.) Connect the minus to the body of the car. Mine is connected as hot positive (FR DOOR) fuse and on positive (ACC) fuse.

G Sensor senses an impact in a accident and saves that file as a event whereas the motion detection is there for parking mode. G Sensor is used both in normal and parking recording and motion detection is only for parking mode. The sensitivity level of them both can be adjusted in the settings menu.

Thanks for your replies guys! Can the cam be just connected "normally" to positive (engine started) and negative if I'm not willing to use the camera in parking mode (G sensor and motion detection disabled)?

If I will enable parking mode, will it stay on all the time and recording? I though it would start recording only if motion is detected or G sensor detects an impact? Otherwise it would stay in stand-by mode, no?

Hi speed chaser, I suggest you google "Nextbase in car cam 402 g manual" go to Nextbase UK downloads and then to 402g profesional in your choice of language and download a PDF,

This will give you all the info you need about the various modes and operation of the camera, most of these cams work in the same way but this one is excellent in that it works properly,

My previous 2 cams were both G1W and both were junk so i got the 402g and it is the best yet, even if you don't get the camera the manual is excellent infomation for anyone with a car cam.

Regards Chris
