Updating Avensis Satnav?

I had a really bad journey across the country where my old free standing NavMan satnav kept getting it wrong as it is the original 2007 software (you have to pay to update NavMan and it is not wrth it for an old basic unit). Anyway for example on the A1 it kept trying to get me to turn off to the roundabouts where the roads now just go stright through, apart from other places where it was well out of date.

So I did not have a wasted journey and got an 08 1.8 auto which I will collect next week and I am wondering how to update the maps on the SatNav? I find the SatNAv on my 03 1.8 very clumsy to use and it is text & voice only but the new one has maps and I am hoping to avoid having to buy a new TomTom or the like.

do you know what model of satnav is fitted to your car (you don't mention trim level)? or have a photo of it?

I looked into updating my joke of a tns300 system, not worth it at the best bart of £200 iirc when you can buy a stand alone tomtom for half the price and its much much better.

iirc there was someone selling probably illegal copies of the update discs for around £30 on some site. still not worth it in my opinion.

Then I fancied a new double din headunit with satnav built in but it narrowed down to a Chinese unit that fit perfect and had every bell and whistle going but I didn't trust the unknown china brand with parting over £300

I decided at the end of the day my phone has satnav if I get stuck

A tomtom with lifetime maps would be a better investment in the long run.

Legal disc updates iirc are ~£150 from Toyota & will probably have lots of mapping that you will never use but are paying for.

You can buy a decent Garmin/Tomtom with lifetime* updates for that.

* your idea of lifetime & the manufacturers' probably are not the same ;)
